I don't know how to feel about omegaverse. On one hand I love noncon/dubcon and am genuinely interested in the worldbuilding. On the other hand forced pregnancy and gender roles squick me out so hard (I actually cried when reading a fic once) and most of the time I end up hating the characters and want them all to die.

(I know no one is forcing me to read it, this is just me being stupid)

Anything where pregnancy is either forced or unavoidable (i.e. you can't avoid having sex, there is a high chance you will get pregnant if you have sex, and there is no birth control) is a big NOPE for me. Fortunately, there are a lot of ABO stories that put some time into worldbuilding and present a context where at least one of the above doesn't apply and pregnancy isn't a given (or they at least imply this is the case by having the characters simply never get pregnant). I've seen a few that actually explore how awful it would be if pregnancy was unavoidable (at least, without creative solutions) in an ABO universe. You still don't have to read them, of course, but not everyone uses the trope as an outlet for pregnancy kink and not everyone who reads them is into that.

I like A/B/O but it's definitely kind of hit or miss for fic. I like the worldbuilding and some of the kinks associated with it but not others. It's definitely a mixed bag what you're going to get in any given story - which kinks are going to be highlighted and how are the characters going to be written. I've managed to avoid reading too many stories that hit hard on gender stereotypes (although I personally wouldn't mind since I could kink on that). Most of what I've read seems to have avoided the common cliches people hate about A/B/O with regards to how it makes the characters act.

I don't have any triggers and only really hard core stuff squicks me, none of which are associated specifically with A/B/O. I'd probably avoid it if I did or only read with a trusted rec because it really can be anything. There are just so many variations that you never know what you'll get.

I too really like SOME of the kinks involved (the desperation, the dubcon elements, the existence of an AU social schema) and hate others (the weird bio-enforced gender roles, the knotting). Not to mention the usually shoddy worldbuilding even in the ones people say are good - it's always just a little tumblresque new terminology, vacation time and/or birth control options and awkwardly contrived sexism allegories. There's NEVER any consideration of how utterly sweepingly different society would actually be, because that's not the point. But the half-assedness bugs me almost as much as the porn squicks.

Anyway, it's not wrong for people to make what they like but it's really frustrating to be so conflicted about a popular thing, so I feel you OP.

Just take the pregnancy out of it then? I've seen a few omegaverse fics where omeganess is vestigial and doesn't result in pregnancy any more. Or you could just read/write fic where they use contraceptives.

Ha, too many things about omegaverse squick me so hard. In the early days before I realized how much of a nope it was for me I read a few, and found myself EVERY SINGLE TIME wishing all the omegas would idk, rise up and overturn society and kill all the alphas and be free or something.

makes sense to me. I like to explore non-con/dub-con that is ingrained in the world building because, as women, I can relate it to the subtle undercurrent of sexual exploitation that I face in real life.

how do characters deal with it, how can they regain dignity? how is a good relationship possible, or how does it make it impossible? and sure, adding instinctual desperate sex is nice as well.

but the moment forced pregnancy and gender roles come up, it's too relatable. I don't want to be reminded of the actual gender roles, which is precisely why I ship so few het ships. omegaverses are often het gender roles dialed up to 210%.

Same. I enjoy it for some aspects, but the whole mpreg thing squicks me hard. Pregnancy in most fic irritates me. I really don't enjoy any A/B/O 'verse where people are basically defined by 'what' they are, and that's all anybody talks about or notices or anything. Meh.

but the gross "breeding" aspects and pregnancy have made it so I don't go anywhere near omegaverse stuff
