No.

I was just thinking of how it can put authors in such a damned if you do, damned if you don't position. Because there's always the risk of representing the wrong way. And I actually read an essay a while back about how white writers shouldn't write POC characters. But there's still supposed to be representation? I guess POC can be minor characters - but then are they tokens?

There just need to be less white writers.

Obligation? No. The obligation lies in making a better society where greater representation in content creation naturally filters into said content.

Amen! Imagine if people spent half the time working on real life issues that they spend griping about fiction.

Obligation? No. But depending on the setting, in this day and age, I'd find it strange if there was none.

Fiction doesn't have any obligation to do anything. It's fiction.

Is representation a good thing? Yes. Is it something that can be demanded or put on a check list? No. Especially since there is still a LOT of backlash against 'writing outside your type' if there's even something that someone else of that type doesn't agree with and that they can reframe to make it look like you're 'doing it wrong' or a stupid fuckhead.

Obligation? Nope. Storytellers only have an obligation to tell a story. Readers and publishers can decide if they want to read or publish the story, and have the right to criticize the story or decide not to read it if the lack of representation bugs them. And to create awards and prizes and scholarships to encourage writers to write stories with more representation.

Yes but --

1. Every author is not obligated to represent every group.

2. The story comes first and you shouldn't shoehorn token characters into a story just for the sake of representation.

3. It's perfectly valid to only write about cis straight white men if that's what the story is truly about. I personally won't read it though.

Fanfics only have to represent the canon, even if it's only in a loose way.

No, but good LGBT-friendly stuff will get my repeat-purchase dollars.

Authors can write what they want; readers can read what they want. If some don't want your book because it's all white, it's up to you to decide whether you care.

No.

The idea that any art form has a moral or social responsibility is regressive.

Obligation? No.

I mean, sure, it would be nice to see, but it's not mandatory.

Re: Does fiction have any obligation for representation?

(Anonymous) 2016-04-16 05:31 am (UTC)(link)
no, but society has an obligation towards equality of all peoples, and representation in art and media would naturally follow from that eventually

If it is fiction produced by the BBC it does. Because the BBC is funded through a licence fee levied on all UK television owners. It also, in its charter to justify that fee, promises to represent all the people in Britain correctly. By its own admission it has a duty to promote inclusiveness and representation in its output, television, radio, books, etc.

Fiction produced by commercial bodies may not have such an explicit duty, but it would be very foolish to alienate a huge portion of their consumer base by not doing so. Representation is just good business for them. Not for profit fiction (like Chick Tracts, and Red Pill-fics) has no duty to do anything except exist according to the producer's whim.
