Things that bug you about yourself?

(Anonymous) 2016-04-16 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
For me: Whenever I get nervous (which happens a lot because anxiety) I default into acting really... idk, overly cutesy & shy, I guess, and I'm prone to playing dumb, but the older I get the more I realize how much more inappropriate it can be? It worked out pretty well for me growing up, but I genuinely don't know how to stop now, haha.

- that I can't keep my weight off

- that I fidget a lot/have a lot of neurotic tics. I biter the skin on my fingers or scratch my teeth with my nails - I guess i looks sort of gross to look at.

- that I only have limited energy, can't multitask, forget important shit, and generally do not have my life together.

This is me, too. Do you have ADD, by any chance? I was diagnosed with it just last year, and it explains so much of my chronic struggles with Getting My Shit Together.

I have no diagnosis, but I suspect I might have it. My bet friend has it and we're so similar in this regard.

Years ago, when I had a fun day in hospital involving brainscans, electrodes and cognitive tests, one doctor said he suspected I have an "undefined concentration disorder", so ear that was terrible useful...not.

I got ritalin through a sympathetic doctor, and it's amazing in terms of how it works on me, but I no longer have access to it

I know I don't have dyslexia, with is weird, because I'm incapable of seeing mistakes on screen. Including those I type.I can write fine by hand, but typing's a mess. Yay digital age.

How did you get an adult diagnosis?

I asked my primary care physician if I could be tested for it, she sent me to a neuropsychiatrist, and he diagnosed me with it after a very brief, suspicious consultation (he gave me three short tests: two short memory tests and then he made me draw a clock face, which doesn't assess ADD) and gave me a prescription for Adderall. I have a BA in Psychology and I knew that this was not the standard ADD assesment, and the Adderall made me very anxious and jittery, so I stopped taking it. Plus, at the time, I was seeing a therapist who was convinced I didn't have ADD and wouldn't entertain discussion about it, so I didn't get any treatment for it beyond that. This was in 2013.

Then last April, I learned there was another psychologist in my therapist's clinic who tested for ADD, so I set up an appointment with her on my own. This time, the tests were legit: I had an hour-long consultation with her in which I discussed all aspects of my life including school performance since childhood. I was given four long questionnaires to fill out about my symptoms, and my dad and aunt were given two quetionnaires about my childhood and adult behaviors. Then I had a four-hour battery of cognitive tests including an IQ test. At the end, I was diagnosed with ADD-Inattentive Type.

So, I relayed all that just to say: depending on your insurance type (HMO or PPO), start with your primary care physician or look for psychologists/neurologists/etc. in your area who test for it, but make sure they do it via extensive testing and getting input from your family or school transcripts or another 2nd-party source.

I'm exactly the same way. And I'm young-looking, so it still works for me as an adult. And I hate that it does because along with having people go easy on me, it also makes them still treat me like a kid.

I'm horrifically unfashionable irl. There's a whole lot of excuses I could give for it and I do try. But I'm at a point in my life that stepping out of the shower and throwing on a t-shirt doesn't cut it. If I'm to be perceived as a competent professional I've gotta groom myself to fit my environment, and that's just so overwhelming.

Also, the bulk of my job involves either not talking to other people at all for long stretches, or talking to the rough sort of guys who get into my industry. And the older I get the harder it feels to have a conversation with strangers without feeling like I can't keep up or (even worse) feeling like I'm some sort of grizzled sailor trying to have a nice chat with a sunday school teacher.

My memory is so poor that when my Mom tells me that I said/did something or when she tells me that I was a location or met someone that I'd "never heard of," I just believe her because my mind is usually a total blank.

Me too, OP, and I hate it too.

I also don't like that I volunteer to do a ton of behind-the-scenes work, but never do any "front of the scene" work because I'm so shy I find it terrifying, so I hardly ever get any credit for what I do. I wish I had the confidence to do my own behind-the-scenes work AND the headliner work too. I feel like the help I give to others gets taken for granted a lot, but I also feel like I'm to blame for putting myself in that position to begin with by offering my help so much. But I also feel kind of gross for wanting recognition for my work, when I'm not upfront with the fact that I'd like recognition, because it's ingrained in me to think that's obnoxious and boastful and proud. Uggghh.

My shitty ass memory, coupled with a horrible attention span, leads to me looking like an airhead most of the time.

Also, procrastination.
