That one at least is a satire of the military complex, so it's meant to be darkly funny. The propaganda videos, Nazi officer uniforms, the campy gore, the final boss being a vagina they penetrate, is all intentionally OTT. Not Airplane, but not as serious as the Mist was meant to be.

True, but realizing that several punchlines I expected were never actually coming made me re-evaluate the entire movie so far and how I'd reacted to it. For example, the gore was OTT for sure but there were a lot of special effects that were probably pretty impressive for the time. I just forgot to factor in when it was made, and assumed everything was hokey on purpose for a laugh.

Try watching Zero Hour, the actually serious movie that largely inspired Airplane! ZAZ lifted bits of dialogue directly from that movie and then added punchlines. Zero Hour is retroactively funny because the characters sound like they're setting up jokes but they're not.
