Your argument that this isn't white washing would be more convincing if you didn't seem in willful denial of the reason that Scarlett Johansen was cast in the first place?? She was cast because they think more people will see a movie with a white protagonist. There will be no black male kusanagi

I am reserving judgement until we know more about the setting, but I'd say there's a strong chance this I'd going to be a disaster.

So which age-appropriate Asian actor with the same box office draw as ScarJo do you suggest for the role?

I didn't say I thought they were wrong, just pointing out why the same logic that got scarjo cast isn't going to get a black guy in the role the way op was suggesting.

Rinko Kikuchi.

The nerd fandom is exactly who they'll draw with this film, and Pacific Rim was a smash hit amongst that demographic. It's never going to draw a mass audience, and now it's going to lose box office sales when hardcore otaku - exactly who was going to see this film for sure, and maybe multiple times if it's any good - refuse to see it now.

Oh, please. The hardcore otaku would throw a tanrum no matter who was cast or how it would be adapted. The default state of hardcore otaku is in the middle of a tantrum about something.

I don't disagree, but constant state of tantrum or no, every other white-washed movie to which there has been an objection has bombed at the box office.

There may be a difference between the two types of tantrum; one where they'll see it anyway and one where they won't. Either that or the objection is enough to drive the less hardcore otaku/geeks away from something they might otherwise have seen.

I know I sure as fuck am not seeing now.

I'm a fan of asian cinema (HK, Korea, Japan) and I have quite a few of asian actresses that I like but honestly, Kikuchi is not one of them. And I didn't like her in Pacific Rim. Everytime someone suggests her for the Major I cringe.
I actually believe that ScaJo (whom I usually don't like at all) will make a much better Major than Kikuchi (Or Shibasaki? WTF? Why Shibasaki?) would have.

I do get the sentiment of Asian people in the US about this issue. on the other hand I think it's pretty bigoted to claim to speak for actual japanese people. Asian people (of japanese descent or no) in the US face all kinds of problems that japanese people in japan don't, so it's no wonder that very many people in japan actually like the casting choice, or at least don't mind.

It's a bit like that scandal about that try-on Kimono thing at that impressionist exhibit where lots of asian americans complained that "their culture" (interestingly many of the protestants were of chinese descent) was being exploited. The problem is: this was not about asian-american culture, and the japanese people from japan do this kind of thing all the time, and didn't get what the fuss was all about because they don't feel they have to battle oppression from a white mainstream (aside from the usual US-imports supplanting local culture, food and stuff that you have everywhere to some degree)

Here's the thing, the answer you're so desperately looking for is of course: no one. No Asian American actress has that kind of box office draw, you know why? because they never fucking get cast in anything enough to get onto the A list. And for you to use that fact as a racist "gotcha!" proof that whitewashing should continue is either tonedeaf and deprived of context or intentionally malicious.

Sorry but it is a "gotcha," because the history of Hollywood racism is not this one movie's problem. It did not start the problem and is not obligated to fix it.

It's not just "not fixing it" it's actively making it worse

thanks racist ScarJo!

From a purely business perspective, I'm pretty goddamn sure making a good movie would far outweigh the box office draw of anyone other than the top, top, top people in Hollywood, and I'm also pretty sure at this point that pissing off nerds is not a great strategy to get PR for your big nerd action movie.

It is a bad decision from a business point of view.
