I was both a thumb sucker and a nail biter. I actually didn't lose both habits until I was 9 and we were moving to the Philippines and my parents decided those habits would likely get me sick over there.

I also did this thing where I'd hold my favorite stuffed animal really close and rub the soft, fuzzy part of the tag on that spot of skin between my upper lip and nose. I don't even know why I did that, but I did it for years. I didn't actually lose that habit until we were in Croatia and I accidentally left my teddy bear in a dorm room somewhere in the middle of nowhere. I didn't have any other stuffed animals that gave me the same effect, so at that point I just stopped.

How did they stop you?

You probably did it once for comfort and it just became a habit. Though the internet is telling me it is also a stress thing.
