I has beautiful art, but apart of the anthropomorphic animals, I don't see how i's really similar to Zootopia.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-19 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not. The only similarity is that it's anthro art for non-furries.

Just for you.

DA

Bloodthirsty, but intriguing.

Thanks for the link.

The art looks nice. How's the story?

(Anonymous) 2016-04-19 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a film noir/detective series, that explores racism, prejudice and the class system. The main character is a black cat - as in, he's black black.

Sounds cool. I might have to give it a try. Thanks for the summary :)

(But Blacksad has nothing to do with Zootopia?)

I think the trouble lies in the fact that Blacksad takes so long to get translated/published in English, so the English side of fandom suffers from that.

Anyway... I love Blacksad and feel the same way. I work in a comic shop (in Europe) and lots of people read Blacksad. It's just that the stories are very mature, and so is the audience, so people who read Blacksad tend to be less... fannish? If that makes sense. And then there are the few people who are put off by the anthro characters, thinking it's for furries lol

[it] takes so long to get translated/published in English ?

It takes a year. That's the same time it takes for US comics to get translated in Europe and for manga to get translated everywhere. That's standard waiting and fandom doesn't suffer from it either, so, nope, it's not that long. Welcome to the other side of the world, Murica.

ayrt

I live in Europe and Blacksad gets translated in about 1-2 months after the original gets published.
I don't know much about the English schedule, but I definitely remember some of my US friends complaining about having to wait for the third book an unusually long time. I guess I assumed it was true for all the books.
Also, people in Europe have no trouble reading stuff in English, so there's no "waiting period" for American stuff, and so they can just jump into fandoms at the same time as the original audience. I'd probably go crazy if I had to wait a year.

The art is gorgeous but the storylines are SO bland. I've read two or three books and nothing really stuck with me.

Not a fan of how the female characters are drawn, either.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-19 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh that's a shame. I was thinking about checking it out but I might not bother then.
What about the female characters designs specifically bother you?

(Anonymous) 2016-04-19 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
The few female characters are usually love interests so their faces and bodies are a lot more humanized for the sexiness factor.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-20 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
I see, can't say I didn't expect that.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-20 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
The storylines are a hit-and-miss for me too, because detective stories aren't my thing, but I really enjoyed the first story (probably because it was so shiny and new) and Amarillo.

I kinda dig how the main female characters are drawn? Obviously, it goes with the genre that they're all supposed to look like buxom beauties, and I can appreciate that, but I kinda wish some of the background female characters (who aren't just eyecandy) became more prominent.

If Blacksad somehow got a feature thanks to Zootopia I'd buy it twice.

Zootopia's original concepts sounded pretty similar to Blacksad, ngl.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-20 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
Anon, I think I'm checking this out. I love the art, and it looks like it could be interesting.

Thanks!

Check out Lackadaisy. It's a webcomic about 1920's rum running cats. Doesn't update often, but boy is it beautiful when it does. Well worth the read.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-21 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I love Lackadaisy. -not op

(Anonymous) 2016-04-20 06:09 am (UTC)(link)
That looks fucking awesome. I want to check that out sometime!

(Anonymous) 2016-04-21 12:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Blacksad is awesome, but I'm annoyed that it's practically impossible to find the first book here. Thus far I only have the second and fourth.
