I wish white people would stop using white as an insult. I mean, I'm not offended by it, it just fills me with so much secondhand embarrassment. Dude, YOU'RE white. Have some self-awareness.

Even if it's meant kinda jokingly? A friend of mine and I have used "u white" as an insult for so long it's morphed into a Skyrim/Elder Scrolls gag -- "u nord."

(Anonymous) 2016-04-19 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
An obvious joke would be one thing but the people I'm talking about are one hundred percent serious.

Don't they have homework to do?

No, cause being on Tumblr "gives them more education."

(Anonymous) 2016-04-19 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it's so silly. I hate self-deprecation anyway. Leave the race-baiting to the minority races.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-19 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
white people be like "white people be like" but they the white people who be like

(Anonymous) 2016-04-19 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, stop being so WHITE with your reactions to people's jokes :P

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2016-04-19 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, no. Calling someone white isn't an "insult", it's a humorous way of calling someone uncultured or saying they're acting like a stereotype.

I call my white friends white for not being familiar with black slang or not knowing how to use chopsticks. It's the same thing as calling a queer friend a fag or a dyke for doing something stereotypically "gay". Since I'm both white and queer and I'm only directing those terms at people who are the same (and are good friends), it's not like I'm levelling something offensive at a stranger.

tl;dr It's a joke, and it's affectionate. If you can't make fun of your friends a little, it's not a very good friendship.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-19 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
OP: That's... really not the context I'm seeing it used in. My friends don't talk like this. It's mostly call-out posts on Tumblr and such where they're talking about how problematic/offensive white people are, seemingly unaware that they are part of the very group they're talking about.

It's like if I went on a ten minute rant about how vapid and mean women are. It would be very strange since I'm actually a woman.

Oh, I was unaware we were talking about tumblr.

I retract that. It's easiest to assume anyone wanking about race on tumblr is a teen who doesn't have any offline friends and is emotionally unstable. Best to ignore it.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-19 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it would be more like if a man ranted about how vile men are, which I personally wouldn't find so strange.
I think it makes sense when you're part of a privileged group to recognize how it opresses minorities, and by talking about it, it shows that you are aware of your group's issues.

I just read the worst OKCupid profile, on this topic - I use OKCupid to find other gay ladies, which can be really nice. But even though I'm a feminist, I get a little wary when I see someone describe themselves first sentence as a feminist. Anyway, that's what this girl did - and her whole profile was insanely aggressive and stuff like "If you can't see how WHITE this town is, then fuck off!" and all the "IT'S NOT MY JOB TO EDUCATE YOU" crap.

but she was a white girl, it was even funnier. Like, do you think you are an honorary POC if you rant about evil white people and how racist you think our town is... on your dating profile... like no you don't sound super fun to be around, yes, I am going to ignore your message.

u sound white

real talk tho, I feel like people who apologize for being white don't get that you don't need to be ashamed of being white, just acknowledge white privilege and try to be woke
no need for self-deprecation

Not sure if I'm agreeing or disagreeing

[personal profile] feotakahari 2016-04-20 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
The stuff that people call "white" in terms of behaviors and beliefs runs a lot deeper than just "white people." I've read Japanese authors who've lived their whole lives in Japan and have the same privileged perspective because they're similarly unused to being a minority. I think it's a lot more on-point to just call it "privileged," or maybe "ignorant."

For white people, it's mainly a technique to dissociate oneself from other white people. It's saying "I'm actually not white because in my heart I feel, thrugh my deeper understanding, like a POC". At least when you use it as a genuine criticism toward other white people.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-20 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not white! I'm pale blue!
