I think some things *do* ruin the childhood version... but only in that it becomes the more popular known version and causes the fandom and general knowledge of the older version to be lost. It does suck when you're trying to talk about an old movie or cartoon then everyone is like yeah! the reboot! I loved it! What do you mean, old version?

I do think there's something of a fannish culture loss when people find and like the new version better with no knowledge of the original. Some of them go and watch the previous one but not all do. Compare how the Kirk/Spock fandom or the Cap/Iron Man changed with the Trek reboot and MCU. I could easily see how that ruined a couple of people's fandom experience if they were fans of the former and the flood of new fic and art is all for the reboot, especially so in the Cap/Iron Man section where the comics personalities are very different from the movies.
