The thought did occur, but I don't want to drift too closely to discworld. It's a different setting, but still I'd feel vaguely plagiarist-y going with them.

Oh, true, didn't think of that. I was trying to think of what the equivalent of fantasy robots would be.

Gargoyles? Something stone-based seems thematically right for construction.

Or genies. Or elementals, something more ethereal but controllable.

You realize that golems are Jewish...? Pratchett didn't invent them.
Though, by all means, don't use them - I'm kind of sick of them being ganked by everybody as stock "unfeeling workers"

Yes, but the role they fill in Jewish mythology differs somewhat from how I would be using them. How I would be using them would fit much more with Discworld than jewish mythology.

It doesn't matter how you use them any more than which vampire mythology you draw from. Golems are from Jewish mythology and your assumption that they were from Discworld was wrong. It's okay to not want to use them out of fear of plagiarizing Discworld, but that doesn't mean they're not from Jewish mythology. I hope that's clear.

Are you infact just assuming that I just didn't know enough? Are you just assuming that because I said I didn't want to use them the same way discworld used them that what I actually meant was that they belong to discworld and never existed before then?

I mean, it seems like you're just taking the dumbest interpretation of what I said so that you could come along and correct me for something I didn't actually say.

It seems to me you were assuming stupidity or ignorance where no such assumption was warranted.

Like If I had been talking about needing a romantic figure for a YA fantasy love story, and someone suggested Vampire, and I had said "The thought did occur, but I don't want to drift too closely to Twilight." would you feel the need to talk down to me about how twilight didn't invent vampires?

No, because A) vampires are friggin' everywhere in pop culture and 2) there's a zillion vampire mythologies around the world. But I've known people who thought Frankenstein was invented by Hollywood. It's not hard to meet people who seem to think that lesser known and much older mythological creatures were invented by the entertainment industry. You see where I'm going with this?

I'm willing to admit the possibility that I colossally misread you, and I apologize for that. But you're making bad-faith assumptions about how I came to the conclusion I did and I'm not having it.

Best bet I'd say.

They were my first thought too, but I'm too obsessed with discworld for that to not feel plagiarist-y. Case suggested Elements, so I'm thinking an Iron elemental might be sort of the right direction. Still open to ideas, tho.

What research did you think I was lacking? Did you think I never heard of golems before discworld? Or did you think I'd not ever be able to find wikipedia?
