Ruining childhoods is obviously hyperbole. And I don't see how, generally speaking, reboots should matter since they are usually obviously reboots and don't intend to be carbon copies of the original.

I can understand being frustrated when sequels/prequels affect "canon" in certain series, though. Like, I don't care about Star Wars, but I can understand fans being annoyed if they hated the prequel trilogy and felt it went against the original films.

Like yeah your personal relationship with the series in question in the end will be your personal relationship and no it's never going to be a big deal, it's just entertainment. But I've had series where I've personally left the fandom because I hated years-later added sequels/prequels affected the "canon" of the original and they were impossible to get away from in fan discussions and such.
