I can relate. Watching Thief fandom go in a years-long meltdown over Thief 2014 before the game was even out was pretty fucking weird. Some of them seemed to literally believe not only that the game was specifically being made aa a personal slight to the Thief community, but that it might literally erase all their copies of Thief 1 and 2.
