Hah. Fat people are sooooo oppressed. They are the black people if today. /s

(Anonymous) 2016-04-21 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Thin people erasure! RAAAAGE!

(Anonymous) 2016-04-21 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
like

it can be the case that society is systemically shitty to fat people in a way that is less severe than the situation of black people

you idiot

(Anonymous) 2016-04-21 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
not like you can change being fat or anything

(Anonymous) 2016-04-21 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
And there it is.

And that makes it okay to not treat fat people like human beings? Because making people miserable and making them hate themselves totally works to make them lose weight, right? Only it generally does the oppsoite.

A joke at your expanse is not a human rights violation. I know distances seem farther away to fat people but you need to gain some perspective.

Nah, it's not a human rights violation. Though there is very real discrimination (I've heard employers say they would not hire a fat person, for example).

Some jokes are funny, but some things just contribute to a culture of bullying.

A joke isn't, but sub-par medical treatment is.

And it's not just fat people who suffer in that regard. Plenty of skinny people go unscreened and untreated for diabetes and heart disease because those conditions are considered a "fat" problem.

This. My endometriosis was only recently diagnosed because my previous doctor insisted that all my health issues (including the asthma I've had since I was 5 and skinny) were weight related and that she wouldn't look into anything or get me tested for anything until I lost some weight. And that the only reason I had such severe pain was because of my weight. And I couldn't change doctors because it was through my school. And previous doctors I'd gone to for the same pain also dismissed it and only suggested losing weight.

So turns out, no, I have an actual health issue that I could have had surgery for years before if someone had just taken the time to listen to me and actually look into it.

I hope you get treated for it soon!!!

Jokes do not "not treating like human beings" make.

No, but they are a whole part of our culture that thinks that fat people are good for nothing but being the butt of jokes and should not be taken seriously. Jokes on their own aren't, but the fact that fat people are considered one of the few acceptable targets and the fact that jokes are all part of the whole culture that treats fat people badly means you can't just consider jokes on their own. They are part of a bigger thing which does treat fat people as if they aren't human.

i'm a 30 on BMI and i even think you need to calm down your victim complex lol

(Anonymous) 2016-04-22 10:45 am (UTC)(link)
"even you"

I hate these sorts of comments. "I suffer from x, and since I think it is ok you should too"

And that makes it ok to be shitty to people for being fat! Obviously! Oh and let's not forget that everyone who is fat can definitely and easily change their fatness. And are jerks/idiots to not do it because it offends people and also it's their fault people are assholes to them.

No, it's not. There's never a reason to treat people like garbage.

But treating jokes about fat people like they're somehow part of a systemic issue like racist or homophobic jokes or whatever is just.........it doesn't make sense.

Like...."ha ha, look at you! you're fat and therefore DISGUSTING" is lame and needless and stupid and awful. To be sure. But I mean...idk. I agree w/ kallanda_lee above re: a culture of bullying, but I also think the reality of the situation is that "fat acceptance" is a deeply troubled concept/movement. And HAES is bullshit.

I say this as someone who has been severely underweight and reasonably overweight and plenty of places in between, and whose weight *is* very difficult to control as a result of real life conditions(tm). Before whatever accusation rolls in.

So....it's never cool to be an asshole. But ~fatphobia?

I agree that the "fat acceptance" movement often takes things too far. But fatphobia is a thing. Just look how fat people are treated in the medical community, how people have actually died because doctors refused to look past their weight to other things. Look how it can be difficult for fat people to find jobs. I would not put it on the same level as homophobia or sexism or racism or transphobia. But it does exist.

I mean..........weight plays a HUGE role in almost every medical problem.

Also, I love this idea that fat people think they've got the market cornered on lazy doctors too quick to pin all their problems on the most obvious thing. Like, yawl, I invite you to dial up any old chronically ill or disabled person you know. I could go to my GP with a cleanly severed arm and a stake through my heart and she'd say "this seems like something for one of your specialists," and I know my experience isn't unique in that regard.

I mean..........weight plays a HUGE role in almost every medical problem.

a) This isn't true and b) People have died because doctors refuse to look at anything other than their weight. I have been underweight most of my life and have even had doctors ignore symptoms because I'm *not* fat. The idea that this prejudice doesn't exist and isn't dangerous just isn't supported by research. I speak as a disabled, chronically ill person.

Larger people are also discriminated against in the job market and as consumers. Add to that the cultural and real life bullying and I don't see how it's not a form of bigotry.

I think prejudice against fat people exists, just like prejudice against ugly people exists, but for me it's a semantic thing. Adding the -phobia to the end of it sounds like it's trying to be on the same level as homophobia, transphobia, and so on. You wouldn't call discrimination against ugly people uglyphobia for example even if it's clear it exists. Or discrimination against extremely tall or short people heightphobia.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-22 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
GP's are over-worked, under pressure and have very limited time with most patients. Of course they're going to start with the obvious first, because that's usually where the problem is actually to be found. Exercise/stop smoking/lose weight/whatever the obvious problem is - they are going to start with that and see what happens.

If you think fat people are uniquely disadvantaged in this regard and that other people don't have to put pressure on their doctors when the obvious answer turns out not to be the correct one, you're kidding yourself.

I don't think I've ever seen an implication here that fatphobia/fat-related bullying is on the same level of institutionalized racism etc., and there's been a lot of fat discussion here.

Calling it what it is - bullying - isn't implying it's equivalent to those other things.

And yeah being overweight is unhealthy. But 1. it doesn't decrease a person's value and 2. it's not really other peoples' business, except to an extent if they're the parents or the SO of the person in question. Fat people know they are fat. They don't need people to say "you are unhealthy and need to lose weight" to have an epiphany. It's rude and presumptive.
