Re: Popular pairings that you don't understand its popularity?

Draco/Harry really Draco/Ginny and Draco/Hermione too, but mostly Draco/Harry). Mostly because that pairing always feels to me like elevating Draco's importance and his character. He was always just a bully to me who grew up a bit but who still was no where near Harry's level. I get enemy and rival ships, but Draco just felt too weak to me to be up to the level for that sort of ship. And every fic I've ever read of the pairing tends to elevate Draco to that level and beyond what I personally see of him in canon.

Giles/Buffy. I know that there are people who like parent/child sorts of pairings. But from what I've seen people who ship this don't even see their relationship as parent/child when it is clear in canon that Giles sees her as a daughter and she sees him as a father figure.

Maeglin/Celebrimbor. Where did this even come from? I don't get it at all. It has become a NOTP to me just from how frequently it shows up when it makes no sense to me at all.

Draco/Hermione is the one I really dislike, tbh. At 12 years old he hated her enough to hope she was killed just on account of being a muggleborn and he didn't get much better after that until the very end when the Death Eaters recruited him. I mean I know he proved to be all talk but still....

I think it's because of the people who grew up when the books were still coming out. they were at a similar age and Draco was much more important in the first 3 books. you're right that he's not up on their level, even when he has a surge of relative importance later.

I've recently gotten into Draco/Harry even though I see Draco the same way you do. I only like it when he's not of the Leather Pants variety though. I think starting from such a weak place is part of the appeal for me. I'm a sucker for redemption stories and sometimes this pairing is a chance for a smaller kind of redemption rather than the grand scale it's usually seen on with big villains, which can be nice sometimes.

I agree with this. I'm usually a sucker for redemption arcs, but this time around I don't know...I think it's because it wasn't written obviously in the canon so it's weird when I see Draco do a 180 (eg: really quiet, loves helping people, becomes best friends with Hermione, etc) in fanfiction I guess.

Draco/Harry was what drew me into the fandom originally, but I feel as the books went on (I got in not too long before OotP) the character of Draco just never really went anywhere interesting and my favourites had moved on to elsewhere as well.
