Popular pairings that you don't understand its popularity?

(Anonymous) 2016-04-21 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
For me it's Kakashi/Iruka from Naruto

The popularity of this pairing has always baffled me.

Mycroft/Lestrade. I just don't see how those two got paired. I guess it is a "pair the spares" sort of thing but I didn't think Mycroft was hot enough to be in the running.

Right? It's been ages since I was in the Sherlock fandom even peripherally but I never got it. Did they ever even interact on screen?

It really surprses me how popular it has been and continues to be. Usually big ships are built on hotness or chemistry (or both). They haven't interacted enough to have chemistry and nothing against Mark Gatiss, but, you know, you said it.

Sauron/Morgoth

Literally anyone else would be more interesting. There are other villains if that's your thing. I can understand it being niche. I do not understand why so many people are into it, and why it's taken over. :(

Other villains from other canons or in Tolkien? Because they're the biggest baddies there, I can understand the popularity, even if I myself hate it.

Draco/Harry really Draco/Ginny and Draco/Hermione too, but mostly Draco/Harry). Mostly because that pairing always feels to me like elevating Draco's importance and his character. He was always just a bully to me who grew up a bit but who still was no where near Harry's level. I get enemy and rival ships, but Draco just felt too weak to me to be up to the level for that sort of ship. And every fic I've ever read of the pairing tends to elevate Draco to that level and beyond what I personally see of him in canon.

Giles/Buffy. I know that there are people who like parent/child sorts of pairings. But from what I've seen people who ship this don't even see their relationship as parent/child when it is clear in canon that Giles sees her as a daughter and she sees him as a father figure.

Maeglin/Celebrimbor. Where did this even come from? I don't get it at all. It has become a NOTP to me just from how frequently it shows up when it makes no sense to me at all.

Draco/Hermione is the one I really dislike, tbh. At 12 years old he hated her enough to hope she was killed just on account of being a muggleborn and he didn't get much better after that until the very end when the Death Eaters recruited him. I mean I know he proved to be all talk but still....

I think it's because of the people who grew up when the books were still coming out. they were at a similar age and Draco was much more important in the first 3 books. you're right that he's not up on their level, even when he has a surge of relative importance later.

I've recently gotten into Draco/Harry even though I see Draco the same way you do. I only like it when he's not of the Leather Pants variety though. I think starting from such a weak place is part of the appeal for me. I'm a sucker for redemption stories and sometimes this pairing is a chance for a smaller kind of redemption rather than the grand scale it's usually seen on with big villains, which can be nice sometimes.

"And every fic I've ever read of the pairing tends to elevate Draco to that level and beyond what I personally see of him in canon."

I agree with this. I'm usually a sucker for redemption arcs, but this time around I don't know...I think it's because it wasn't written obviously in the canon so it's weird when I see Draco do a 180 (eg: really quiet, loves helping people, becomes best friends with Hermione, etc) in fanfiction I guess.

Draco/Harry was what drew me into the fandom originally, but I feel as the books went on (I got in not too long before OotP) the character of Draco just never really went anywhere interesting and my favourites had moved on to elsewhere as well.

Hermoine/Snape. Because yuck, and where do you see any sexual tension there?

Re: Popular pairings that you don't understand its popularity?

ANY nasty older guy in the proximity of a young girl must have sexual tension. Especially if they dislike each other. didn't you know that?

I mean, I don't like the ship, but I'm pretty sure I understand its popularity

It is popular because people want to fuck Snape

Oh yeah, same. I'm not in the Naruto fandom anymore, but I remember not getting that ship at all. I think it got popular early in the series' run when they were the only two significant adult characters, so that might be why some people started shipping them. Maybe they created all the fanon that most of the ship revolves around (since there isn't much canon) and people just latched onto that.

Vegebul. I didn't get the ship as a kid and I still don't get it. What makes matters worse is that 99% of the fics are widely ooc portraying Vegeta as some pained, tragic figure and Bulma as some delicate maiden who gets smacked around by Yamcha everyday of the week. Of course, I can't say this on tumblr because someone is either gonna bitch about it, or make some dumb "let's not post ship hate uwu" post. God. Let me vent on my damn blog.

I never really figured out where Pearl/Amethyst came from. Then again, I guess I still think of Amethyst as a child compared to Pearl and Garnet.

Agreed on KakaIru. The other one is, obviously for me, SasuSaku.

Just...no.

Jack/Bunnymund. Like, I get that they both have inappropriately sexy voices, I do. But...he's a rabbit. There are like six different attractive people are who aren't rabbits to ship Jack with, one of which is a sexy villain. How did this happen.

Any dwarf/Mirkwood Elf pairing in The Hobbit. Thranduil/Thorin, Thranduil/Kíli, Kíli/Tauriel - no, just no.

I can never and will never understand why people ship Saberhorn/Kickback. They barely even interact in the show. (It totally isn't also because I ship Saberhorn/Glowstrike.)
