Oh yeah, same. I'm not in the Naruto fandom anymore, but I remember not getting that ship at all. I think it got popular early in the series' run when they were the only two significant adult characters, so that might be why some people started shipping them. Maybe they created all the fanon that most of the ship revolves around (since there isn't much canon) and people just latched onto that.

dunno, they're like Naruto's parental figures in a way. I imagine older naruto fans identified with the first guy and found Kakashi hot?

I always figured it was Kakashi fangirls who wanted to pair him with someone who was a) male, and b) not a child. It never appealed to me either, but I've always had a soft spot for Kakashi/Gai, so I was a bit biased.

That's definitely what happened. People latched onto it early on, and it just... stuck around.
