I'm more and more inclined to believe that the anti-reylo sentiment was started by asspained FinnRey shippers whining about their ship never taking off properly in fandom. It's a shipwar at heart, but they're playing dirty by turning it into a social justice battle.

I'm of the opinion that basically all ship hate is inspired largely or all in jealousy over your own ship.

I agree. Whenever I see someone campaigning hard to paint a ship as being ~so problematic~, I always get the urge to ask what they ship.

Having hated a particular ship in my youth, I partially agree with this.

However! I'd add some ship hate is also inspired by squick.

I'm not in the Star Wars fandom and I don't follow anyone that is. Can someone give me context on why Anti-Reylos think the pairing is abusive and why Reylos do not?

It could be abusive depending on how you ship it. That doesn't make it wrong to ship it.

Anti-Reylo people think it's racist, sexist, incest, pedophilia, and abusive.

No, in my experience it's mostly Rey/Finn shippers that also hate Finn/Poe.

All of these things are going on at once

I think it's misguided to complain bc there's always icky stuff online, don't give it more attention if you hate it. But I think the whiny secrets here are from one or two butt hurt fans who think no one should get to disapprove of their kinks. And are trying to drum up support.

Most people criticizing it are, IMO, young, passionate fans who are finding their way. Like early twenties, or teens. (Many identify strongly with Rey and don't want to see the character abused or degraded.) I think it's healthy to figure out what you consider abusive at that age!

Fandom wank is rarely a good life plan, though, so hopefully they'll learn to ignore icky ships instead of talk about them loads.

Otoh, look at all the wank here from mostly quite mature fans. Maybe people don't outgrow it. :P

Basically I think people whining about anti Reylo need to find a new hobby. I weigh young people sorting out abusive issues far more highly than the theory you can ship whatever you want without criticism. That doesn't exist unless you stay in your own play area, which frankly most fans would be happier doing anyway.

Well, you might be right. Attacking other ship to make yours look better has been a thing in fandom since... well, I don't know since when, but it's a thing in fandom, sadly.

tbh some reylo shippers arent exactly helping with the abuse discussion.

i see reylo posts where they compare reylo to persephone and hades, as well as fanart with them as reincarnated versions of persephone and hades. these posts tend to get 1k+ so i assume it's not just the minority of the reylo shippers.

Who cares if they compare them to Hades and Persephone?

I think people are just tired of the Draco in leather pants trope. I actually think there would be waaay more Reylo shippers if Kylo's fans stopped woobifying him and accepted that being a garbage person is a big part of who he is.

Also, I'm really fucking tired of and uncomfortable with female characters being kidnapped and toyed with. So if that's being turned into a "social justice battle", I'm okay with that.

this is pretty much my opinion on it. but i keep pretty quiet about my reylo hate.
