Re: Can somone please explain in dumb-dumb terms...

Effect is a noun, affect is (usually) a verb.

"I am not affected by your bullshit."

"Your bullshit does not have any effect on me."

Ok. Now can someone please explain in dumb-dumb terms the difference between a noun and a verb.

Re: Can somone please explain in dumb-dumb terms...

(Anonymous) 2016-04-23 08:35 pm (UTC)(link)
uhh... really?

Nouns: items. things. names, places, objects.

Verbs: actions

A noun does a verb, sometimes a noun does a verb to another noun.

I (noun) eat (verb) cake (noun).

Cats (noun) have (verb) whiskers (noun).

The effect (noun) of the Great Depression was enormous.

The Great Depression primarily affected (verb) the working class.

Nouns and verbs aren't exclusively English constructs. Basically all natural languages distinguish things from actions.

I know it's two days later but I was actually just thinking they didn't know what noun and verb translated to

Did you sleep during middle school English classes or...?

Nouns are things, verbs are actions. And though the other anon didn't mention it, adjectives are descriptions.

DA Dethtoll, please don't be rude because someone doesn't know something that you do. When someone's trying to learn something, stuff like this can really affect their chances of asking the next time they don't know something. In fact, it's this kind of stuff that generally stops adults from learning. They're too afraid of looking stupid or being picked on to ask.

Tell it to the anon above me then. Either this person slept through school, or their school failed them. Nouns, verbs, etc. are all basic language stuff everyone should know. Not knowing the difference between "effect" and "affect" is one thing and that's fine, it's entirely another thing to not even have a basic idea of how your own language works. It's not like there aren't resources for this stuff everywhere. Somewhere along the line, someone fucked up, and I'm all out of benefit of the doubt today, come back tomorrow.

I'm also strongly leaning towards the idea that AIRT is having a giggle so it'd be all moot anyway yeah?

Re: Can somone please explain in dumb-dumb terms...

(Anonymous) 2016-04-24 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
AYRT No, I'm not having a giggle. I had learning difficulties at school and I was the last one in my class to read and write. I had the remedial classes and had this kind of stuff said to me for years. Not everyone learns the same way and common knowledge isn't common for everyone. It's just not nice to make someone feel stupid for not knowing something, no matter how simple that seems to you. The same thing applies to the anon above you're and the other people being obnoxious in this thread. You're the only named user which isn't to say you're being any worse, just that I've seen you post before and I was trying to give you the benefit of the doubt. I didn't think you were trying to be mean but apparently being condescending is more important to you than treating someone who's trying to learn civilly. So I'm out of benefit of the doubt for you too.

No, if you're a grown human being and you go onto the internet not knowing the very fucking basics of how language works you deserve everything people throw at you. There's just no excuse, and dethtoll is doing everyone a favor by making this guy confront is ignorances or, failing that, fuck off out of our community.

Maybe it's just me, but you seem to have turned into a real prick since your dad died. Maybe you should take a break from the internet?

don't be silly, dear, he's always been an insufferable shit, his dad allegedly "dying" didn't change anything :)

being a bit condescending to someone who is asking about something that is a) common knowledge or should be and b) very, very easy to google is not exactly an unforgivable sin.

Re: Can somone please explain in dumb-dumb terms...

This is the way I always remember it: a verb is a doing word and a noun is a name.

I think you have to just learn how they work in a grammar.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-23 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Verbs are the central part of speech in Indo-European grammar systems.

In the English language, the sentence,
I eat cake.
has the verb "eat." "I" is the subject, indicating who eats. And "cake" is the direct object, indicating what is eaten.

In the English language, the sentence,
I cause an effect.
has the verb "cause." "I" is the subject, indicating who causes. And "(an) effect" is the direct object, indicating what is caused.

The sentence,
That affected me deeply.
has the verb "affected." "That" is the subject, indicating what affected. Then, "me" is the direct object, indicating who was affected. Finally, "deeply" is an adverb modifying the verb "affected."

To use "effect" as a verb, see the sentence,
I effected change.
has the verb "effected." "I" is the subject, indicating who effected. And "change" is the direct object, indicating what was effected.

I can never remember the difference either anon. I usually go N = Name = Noun. Therefore verb must be a "doing word".

Fuck adjectives.

For affect vs effect, I remember them as "the magic Affected them, having a burning Effect" - then I backwards chain the sentence I want to use the word in to see if it fits better with the first half or latter half.

Affect = Action. A = A.

Adjectives are descriptions.

Also, adverbs alter verbs.
