Wanna be a pro, don't wanna be -that- neighbor

(Anonymous) 2016-04-23 08:51 pm (UTC)(link)
So I've got an ocarina I've been trying to learn how to play.

The problem is, I live in an apartment, and walls tend not to be thick in these places, so I refrain from practicing here for fear of pissing everyone off. Yes, I know technically they can't kick you out for playing during the daytime, but I work during the day and don't want to risk disrupting someone's dinner or early bedtime.

Ocarinas can get pretty loud the higher the note. Anyone have any suggestions on where/how to get some practice time in? ("friend's house" is not really an option as they also live in apartments)

Just play at home. And do it for like half an hour or so at a time.

Stick egg cartons to the walls and you'll have instant soundproofing. Or go to the park and practice there. Your local park will be full of people practicing something.

The egg cartons thing is probably the better choice. If OP works during the day then a park isn't exactly a good choice.

Well uh

I tend to buy organic so my egg cartons are plastic, but maybe I can tape something else to the wall. Or at least lean something against it.

This. There's someone in my building that practices the piano. I actually quite like listening to them practice.

OP, you're never going to please everyone, and as long as you're not practicing for hours on end at ridiculously off hours, you should be find unless your neighbours are hella nitpicky.

You could practice at a park.

Or talk to your neighbors and see if their might be a good time when it won't bother them.

As long as you play at a decent hour, you should be fine. If you want to be extra nice, you can talk to your neighbors and/or landlord to see if it'll be okay.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-23 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
This is a nice thought, but the problem with asking your neighbor's permission (which is what anon would be implicitly doing) is... what are you going to do if they say no, absolutely not?

Now a heads-up might be nice, along with assurances that anon will keep the music practice limited to daylight hours and NOT early mornings (and I'd be specific if possible) and then leave a way to contact you (e-mail, text, etc.) if it's a problem. But don't "see if it'll be okay". You'll open yourself up to a whole new world of problems if you cede control over what goes on in your apartment to people who don't live in your apartment.

I don't think neighbours can just say "no". I mean they can, but it doesn't effect anything. It's generally expectwd that people are allowed to make a certain amount of noise in their homes, even if it's audible to other people, especially during the daytime. If someone absolutely cannot tolerate hearing any sounds from the other apartments, then they should probably be living somewhere more soundproof to begin with.

Of course it's good to take other people's comfort into account when doing activities that cause potentially distracting noises (don't do it all the time, don't do it late at night or early in the morning, and if you know that someone is doing something that needs concentration at the moment, or needs to rest, then maybe don't do the loud activity right them). But to a reasonable extent, people are allowed to cause noise.

Thirding all the suggestions for your local park. Or hire a storage locker and practice in there to your heart's content.

Just practice at home. As long as you're doing it before, say, 9 PM, you're being a perfectly civilized neighbor, and anyone who gets a hair up their ass about it is an asshole. Normal life noises are part and parcel of living in an apartment building, and a neighbor practicing an instrument at a reasonable time is part of normal life noise.

Re: Wanna be a pro, don't wanna be -that- neighbor

(Anonymous) 2016-04-23 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, unless someone works third shift. Then your "reasonable hour" might be the time they need to sleep.

Re: Wanna be a pro, don't wanna be -that- neighbor

(Anonymous) 2016-04-23 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly, as someone who works 10pm to 6am sometimes, short of actual construction right outside my window, very little wakes me. XD I know that's not true for everyone, but OP can't go around checking to see what time everyone works when a great majority do the 9-5 thing.

Re: Wanna be a pro, don't wanna be -that- neighbor

(Anonymous) 2016-04-23 10:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm definitely not suggesting OP needs to do this, I only mentioned third shift workers to point out that just because someone might not appreciate noise at 9pm, it doesn't make them an unreasonable asshole.

Re: Wanna be a pro, don't wanna be -that- neighbor

(Anonymous) 2016-04-23 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Exactly. Part and parcel of apartment life is learning that you have to give up loud noises because other people work on different schedules.

Re: Wanna be a pro, don't wanna be -that- neighbor

(Anonymous) 2016-04-24 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
lmao no, you have every right to practice music or play music during daylight hours, sorry

I hope you get an upstairs neighbor who takes up clogging AND trombone. :)

Re: Wanna be a pro, don't wanna be -that- neighbor

(Anonymous) 2016-04-24 03:06 am (UTC)(link)
Depends on the ordinance/whatever is in the contract. I believe the hours between 10 PM and 6 AM are considered quiet time.

Re: Wanna be a pro, don't wanna be -that- neighbor

(Anonymous) 2016-04-23 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
It's still a reasonable hour. People who work third shift are in the minority. Most people run on diurnal hours, and that's what you have to account for. It's totally unreasonable to expect people to stop living a normal life because someone, somewhere might be sleeping when 95% of the rest of the local population is awake.

Besides, having worked third shift while living in an apartment for years before I got my current job, you learn to cope. You figure out what noise cancelling shit works for you, you get some blackout blinds, and you don't flip out because the kid next door is practicing for a piano recital, or there's someone with a jackhammer on the street.

Re: Wanna be a pro, don't wanna be -that- neighbor

(Anonymous) 2016-04-24 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah... you're right.

I think I'm super paranoid because the idiot who used to live below me would play music so damn loud, and with wall-shaking bass, and when he wasn't doing that, he was practicing his singing and rapping. And though he would move into closed room, I could hear him at all hours. Actually, at first, I thought he was yelling at the game on television... lol

He moved out before the end of his lease, so I assume he was kicked out for being a loud asshole (I complained about him doing that crap after midnight, and I'm sure someone else complained).

Re: Wanna be a pro, don't wanna be -that- neighbor

(Anonymous) 2016-04-24 11:11 am (UTC)(link)
You sound a lot more considerate than my next-wall neighbor. I'd happily deal with ocarina practice if it meant never having to endure a bunch of drunk teenagers singing along off-key to atrociously bad white rap about getting drunk, and then returning from partying at 4am and proceeding to have loud conversations in several rooms around mine, while chronically forgetting the lights on in the corridor next to my room (there's glass panels in my door, they're those blurry kinds but they let the light through).

I'd say you should be able to practice during daytime. Maybe tell the people that if they need silence at that particular time for some reason, thwy can ask you to practice some other time.

Did they blast music with bass that rattled your walls and floors?

It's sad how many of those types of folks sign contracts and then think they can live like they're in a jungle.

Hope that butthole shapes up or gets the hell out of your living area.
