Really? That seems to have been the central issue in SF&F fandom over the last five years or so. It's just happening in different spaces from the whole art/gif/fanfic/tumblr scene.

This. It's a common topic of discussion --arguably THE main topic of discussion-- but mostly among older fans, via blogs and message boards rather than tumblr.

Or in periodicals, the "Women Destroy" special issues came with a dozen essays about feminism in the genre.

Then there's the Tiptree awards, the now-annual wank over the Hugos, and there's wank over new Star Trek casting when the casting hasn't been announced yet.
