Do you mean Cheren and Bianca's friendship, or the Cheren-Bianca-Protag friendship?

If it's the latter, it's kind of difficult to carry on a friendship between three people when one third of the group has dropped off the face of the earth. I would've liked to have seen that character return, though. Doubly so if you'd gotten to battle them with the team they finished the game with- it would've been possible with the Memory Link.

I'm assuming they meant the three of them, considering the artwork they chose.

To me, the rivals just got too busy with their new jobs to really interact much with each other anymore. Since they're done with their journeys, there isn't really a reason for them to explore places together.

I didn't really like either of them in BW - one of the few things I really disliked about the games tbh. Bianca in particular got on my nerves. Cheren was just kinda there. They both majorly improved in the sequels imo (and Cheren got kinda hot too).

I sort of ship Cheren/Bianca but all-in-all the happy fluffy friendship the three of them were all supposed to have fell pretty flat to me. It felt forced - and it got even worse in XY when there were FIVE of them running around (including the protag). I wish Pokemon would go back to giving you a rival - an actual rival, not a fake rival who is really a friend and also a huge pushover. And none of this boring 2D ensemble nonsense. The game can support a good story, but it's better told through the protag's interactions with NPCs they encounter along the way, IMO. Having a bunch of people randomly show up every couple of towns, say cliche things, and throw one weak Pokemon at you in a sham of a battle, then disappear, rinse and repeat, is just annoying.

I totally agree with you about the friendship group in XY. There were just too many of them and there were only about two of them with any personality.

I liked Tierno, although I don't think they pushed the "I want to be a dancer" thing far enough. I liked Shauna too. I think they should've combined Shauna and Trevor's personalities to give one rounded character ("I want to make lots of memories whilst completing the PokéDex!" is much more interesting the two things seperately.)

I don't mind the friend-who-is-a-rival thing that much, as long as they can put up a decent challenge. Barry's final team was brutal and Hugh is cool, but Calem/Serena were such a pushover, they're hardly worth mentioning.

I thought they were all pretty boring. There were too many of them for any of them to really be developed characters.

I also feel like all the rivals lately have been total pushovers, and it's gotten worse with each gen. Remember the days when hearing Blue's theme music put you in a "omg are my Pokemon ready???" panic? I'm not even trying to be a genwunner here, but I think that's one valuable thing they could go back to at least for a while. Obviously there are other ways to make a game challenging and I'm not a huge fan of recycled storylines, but it'd still be better than having a rival who's not challenging at all.

And, now that I think about it, I think making them more challenging would also make their characters more interesting.

Oh, also, I don't think it's necessary to include the opposite-gendered MC as the rival or one rival. It was kinda cute in RSE as a new gimmick but anymore it just makes for the flattest characters at all - it's like they can't develop them at all because they're supposed to be the other self-insert option, so they've basically been all indistinguishable from third gen on. Have a unique NPC be the rival, and if you must include the other MC, make them a minor character. /tangent to a tangent

Aww...I love Bianca.

But then again...she had more personality in the anime and omg I loved her.

I couldn't keep up with the anime. I only watched it for the Pokemon characters and even that wasn't enough to carry it for me after a little while, sadly.

I did find Bianca pretty irritating in the anime, too, but then again, I didn't actually like any of the human characters in the BW anime except Cilan.
