I know I saw this and enjoyed it, but I don't remember the details because it's been so long. But it was one of those lovely old fashioned ghost/suspense stories that the British do so well. If you don't mind my asking, what were your initial reservations?

I thought it looked slow and possibly boring compared to some of the more mainstream box office horror films I've gone to see with my friends. I wouldn't have guessed this, but it turns out I think I like these spooky suspenseful ones that mess with your head.

Ah, I see. Well, you're right in that Crickley Hall (and other movies/stories of that genre) aren't much like mainstream horror but I quite like them and the psychological horror is very effective. The British have a great tradition of old school horror writers to draw from, too. Not just James Herbert (who wrote Crickley Hall) but M.R. James as well. You might also like these other British adaptations:

The 13th Tale
The Tractate Middoth

To be honest, I found the characters and some of their actions to be creepier/more disturbing than most of the supernatural aspects.

I don't remember much but I thought the beginning was promising but then it kinda... fizzled out
