I mean, I'm a Rin/Haru shipper, and I don't deny the subtext between Makoto and Haru, but I just found Makoto so incredibly boring so I can't get into the ship.

I don't think that's what the secret is talking about. As someone who has absolutely nooooo dog in this fight (this anon doesn't personally slash very much, I watched the series with friends because I was invited to), by the end of the second season I thought it was pretty obvious which ships you were "supposed" to be rooting for. (Sousuke/Rin and Makoto/Haru.) The merchandise didn't exactly help things either. Where the first season's merchandise seems like it was more "ship EVERYTHING!" (from ReiGisa to RinHaru to RinMakoto, etc), the second season was much more....pointed I guess? It was basically all Sousuke/Rin and Makoto/Haru with some Rei/Nagisa as an afterthought.

Obviously none of this makes one "canon" and the other "not canon" since while this show thrived on heavy subtext, subtext was all it was in the end. But I do understand where the OP is coming from. If you're not watching the show with shipping goggles on (for any pairing, my friend is a big Rin/Nitori shipper and the second season did not make her happy, I felt really bad for her actually) they did kind of neatly pair them off in the second season. Rin and Haru still had one major episode and it was no doubt absolutely subtext filled, but that doesn't really change that Sousuke was obviously the "replacement" so Rin had someone to be all subtexty with while they focused on the Makoto/Haru subplots and treated Iwatobi and Samezuka as separate storylines without much overlap.

I don't see anything in AYRT's comment that refutes any of this..?

Yeah, uh, I realize this, but I /was/ responding to the secret. The OP's secret was pretty much "I see Makoto and Haru as a romantic couple, but I can't admit this bc ship wars omg!!" and I responded by saying, "Even though I ship Rinharu, I agree that Makoto and Haru have lots of romantic subtext and are depicted in a way that makes it easy to see them in a romantic relationship. The only reason I don't ship Makoto/Haru is because I find Makoto dull."

I think your first comment maybe comes across as a bit abrasive. I've seen the show and I only have very peripheral knowledge of this fandom and the wank contained therein, but "Makoto is so dull how could Haru even like him???" is a frequent tactic that seems to be employed by salty RinHaru shippers. (And in fairness, of course the opposite would be "Rin was an abusive ass how could Haru even like him???" from salty MakoHaru shippers.) Your comment sounded like it could have had shades of that, at least from my perspective, which is probably why the AYRT (?? I'm losing track of the conversation) commented what they did.

I think what they said was fine...? It's their opinion. There was a Free! secret yesterday where people said they weren't a fan of Sousuke or Rin and also said their opinions as to why.

Whoops, I pressed enter before finishing my comment LOL.

Which is also fine, everyone is just stating how they felt about ships and characters.

"the second season was much more....pointed I guess? It was basically all Sousuke/Rin and Makoto/Haru with some Rei/Nagisa as an afterthought."

That's...kind of the point, and a very poor way of a show treating its fans. It tells you there's no real meat to these ships, they're just there so everyone can have cookie-cutter ships.

But the show itself is about Rin and Haru at its center, because they're the main characters. The neat, clean pairings are great for merch (you can't slice everyone up nicely with just five characters), but that's about it beyond relevance to the show.

NAYRT

Lol you do realize a show can be about two characters without shipping them? Shocking, I know. There's no real "meat" to RinHaru either, but keep dreaming. Literally all of these ships are cookie-cutter, including RinHaru. RinHaru is as painfully cliche as the rest and is just taking advantage of another shipping angle.

Acting like Rin and Haru are the only pairing to have any "meat" to them is painfully transparent of you.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-25 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
ia.

I mean Rin/Haru is probably more cliche but hey, I like rival ships. Makoto was just a little too dull for me, too. But I acknowledge that both pairs have deliberate subtext so whatever, live and let ship.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-26 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
Same. They really only brought Sousuke back so that Rin could hve a complete team and someone to be spare-paired with, because god forbid we just enjoy a nice anime about five friends :/ gotta have a ship for everyone so everyone knows what to ship!!
