I didn't know something and I asked and it was stupid and I got called on it and now I can't stop obsessing over what a fucking idiot piece of shit I am.

I didn't know something and I asked

You did the right thing to do when you don't know something. I'm sorry someone was an asshole.

(This is assuming you didn't ask something outrageously offensive.)

(Anonymous) 2016-04-25 10:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Or outrageously stupid, like "Are eskimos real" or "What's the difference between a verb and a noun."

Precisely.

Well, if you don't ask about things you don't know about, how are you supposed to learn? The people who chastised you for it are idiots.

Right.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-26 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
Ditto.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-25 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Well now you know better.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-25 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
How stupid?

(Anonymous) 2016-04-25 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
There's a level of ignorance that's unacceptable, but you have to work real hard to reach it. Chances are you're fine.

[personal profile] kallanda_lee 2016-04-25 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
The person calling you out on it was mean.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-25 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
You don't know that. Maybe they were being really really stupid? Maybe they were being offensive? Maybe they're white supremacists, or MRAs or gamergaters or some shit.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-25 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you honestly think that someone who is an asshole would feel bad about asking a stupid question?

You're most likely fine. Just ignore the peanut gallery and keep asking questions. That's the best way to learn.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-25 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
You need to tell us what you did before I'm going to offer you any sympathy.

I think it may have something to do with the "What's the difference between a noun and a verb?" incident from yesterday.

Apparently they were the Verb/Adjective anon, and they tried to kill themselves.

Eh, we all say dumb shit from time to time. It doesn't make you a terrible person. Sometimes you get caught at an incredibly distracting moment, other times you really don't know. Whatever. It's life. You learn. Chances are your audience will forget by tomorrow. If anyone keeps ripping on you for it, they're the ones being stupid.

Hey, I know how you feel. I feel this all the time, to the point where I often have to give myself a pep talk before walking across the hall at work to ask my assistant manager something.

But you know what? You're not an idiot. It's impossible for everyone to know everything. We come into this world knowing nothing, and what we wind up knowing once we reach adulthood has to do with circumstances we don't have much control over, and even once we recognize the gaps in our knowledge, there's so much information and so many frames of reference and so much to experience that there's still no way that we can ever absorb it all. And on top of that, a good lot of it is constantly changing. We'll continue not knowing things until the day we die.

That's normal.

The people who made you feel stupid are jerks. They don't know everything, either. And, you know, a lot of people are jerks, so it takes some courage to admit when you don't know something.

Rather than being an idiot, OP, you're actually kinda brave. And you're interested in learning on top of that, which is pretty cool.

If you asked a sincere question, even one that makes people uncomfortable, then you've done nothing wrong. Absolutely nothing. That's how people learn.

I assume this involves some social justice bullshit and this is why, as a queer person of color who believes deeply in social justice, I am sick of this SJW bullshit. These people are not helping. They are setting our society back and are feeding the forces that want to promote white patriarchy.

You're not an idiot piece of shit. You tried and you asked, you did everything correct.

Being an idiot piece of shit is calling out or mocking someone for not knowing something.

Not your fault some people assholes, try to go relax and not fret over it. Nobody knows everything, even the "stupid" things.

Don't feel bad, anon. I usually forget or confuse words too. To err is human.
