But you know what? You're not an idiot. It's impossible for everyone to know everything. We come into this world knowing nothing, and what we wind up knowing once we reach adulthood has to do with circumstances we don't have much control over, and even once we recognize the gaps in our knowledge, there's so much information and so many frames of reference and so much to experience that there's still no way that we can ever absorb it all. And on top of that, a good lot of it is constantly changing. We'll continue not knowing things until the day we die.
That's normal.
The people who made you feel stupid are jerks. They don't know everything, either. And, you know, a lot of people are jerks, so it takes some courage to admit when you don't know something.
Rather than being an idiot, OP, you're actually kinda brave. And you're interested in learning on top of that, which is pretty cool.
