Free! belongs to a genre that uses boys sharing emotional moments for the same effect that women have sex with each other in mainstream porngraphy. It's not about the great purpose of the story (in this case, friendship), it's about the superficial elements that the audience find titilating (in this case, fujobait).

I don't see how your comment refutes anything AYRT said though. Of course the show is emotional, homosocial (and at points, barely concealed homoerotic) blackmail, because that's a hugely popular genre in Japan PLUS it gets imported to the West and makes a shitton of money here as well. Just because one can admit Free! and pretty much all of it's subtext and overdramatic BS (nearly grown young man with a massive crying problem LOOK EMOTIONSSSS, lololz there's only one bed, very first fight under the fireworks!!!11!!!, etc) is absolutely cheap cash grabs doesn't mean that they didn't intend for it to be literally everything this fandom seems to love it for, two-bit subtext and all. The AYRT simply said it's ridiculous when people start bitching about "nothing will ever be canon" because come on, anybody watching this show can see the subtext and exactly what they wanted you to ship at any given point (and yes, it did change throughout the series run in my opinion, I thought it was obvious Rin/Haru was supposed to be the main pairing and MakoHaru was put there for secondary fanservice for those who aren't into rival pairings, and then Makoto and Mako/Haru in particular just skyrocketed in popularity in Japanese fandom and they totally switched gears).

The point being that there is a difference between the creators knowing what kind of parings that a certain subset of the fangirls goes gaga over, and the creators actually portraying these pairing as a reality within the story. I'd buy the portrayal of makoharu as romantic if not for the Sidney episode (complete w. hilarious sharing of bed), if not for everything that is Rin and Rei across both seasons, if not for the biggest relationship development of ES, which happens between Haru and Sousuke in the bloody extra episode. Makoto and Haru's wonderful friendship isn't a subtly portrayed same-sex romance, it's fanservice.
