They can write what they want, and I can read what I want.
I personally find that in most AUs, the characters are unrecognizable to me. I want to read about Levi, not a weird facsimile who looks vaguely like him but acts completely differently. The character I like is Levi. (and let's not start about the utter lack of anything resembling a plot in many fics- but again, that's my damage).
If you enjoy writing AUs, more power to you. Have fun! Enjoy!
For me, I'll prefer canon divergence over AU, and on the off-chance I go AU, I like paralleling the original plotline.
