I had a weird moment a couple of years ago when I had to readjust my perceptions of John and Rodney because I had fandom characterisations in my head. Rodney was soooo much an asshole. But that didn't make him a bad character, imo. But I can totally understand why that would be annoying. Maybe you only enjoy SGA through the fandom goggles.

It's a little depressing when that happens. Something you loved long ago either didn't age well with the times, or you have completely different perceptions of people and the world. It makes it hard to enjoy the things you used to love. Maybe you can hold onto your old headcannons and ignore the new stuff? Though that is hard to do too.

They're awesome. You have worse taste than before. It happens. Read some classics and watch some quality TV then get back to SGA. Hope it helps.

Radek, Ronon and Teyla were my favourites. I was so-so on everyone else, and I absolutely loathe John Sheppard. I was never overly enchanted with SGA, though, so I never had the realisation-in-hindsight.

I LOVE SG-1, and I tried so hard to get into SGA too but I just...I couldn't. It just didn't work for me.

I like SGA, but several of the characters didn't really do it for, especially John. Rodney was SUCH AN ASSHOLE, but he was at least interesting. I found John boring. The only character I can think of off the top of my head that I really liked a lot was fucking Todd the Wraith. And I didn't even see his whole arc because I stopped watching in s 3, I think it was.

(I had issues with the characters in SG-1, too. Dunno what it is about Stargate that the characters just didn't quite work for me for the most part, even though I liked the show overall.)

I'm about halfway through the first season of SGA. I've been told it eventually breaks out of the plot-mold carried over from SG-1, and I'm kinda waiting for that to happen, because after 7.5 seasons of SG-1 and half a season of SGA, I'm sick of "W is the buttmonkey, X, Y, and Z save him/her by using science/shooting things/sarcasm", and "oh yeah, it's halfway through the season and our budget's shot, have a clip show."

I like Elizabeth and Teyla too, but also Ronon, Beckett, Radek and Lorne.
