Now that you mention it, I guess Spider-Man is supposed to be a bit arrogant and annoying. That may be one reason he resonates with so many black people.

OK, that's a bit trollish this late in the day. More seriously, Spider-Man has a kind of confidence that a lot of us, of any color, wish we had. Even though he's canonically a white guy from Queens, it's a very New York attitude in general. And it's easy for me to see why a lot of kids want to be like that. And then they grow up to be arrogant rappers and comedians. Or Childish Gambino.

On the page, it probably stings less. But yes, he acts like an arrogant ass under the mask.
