Because it's generally in public, and "yes" is the only acceptable answer?

If you're not sure you want to say yes, what do you do? The only "acceptable" answer is tears and delight in a public setting, and everyone going "aww." Basically, it can go very wrong. It would be humiliating for both parties then.

Proposals should be couple-specific. What might be a hugely romantic gesture for one couple would be totally wrong for another. Any guy who puts someone on the spot this way without knowing they would be OK with it needs to be prepared for teh awkward to happen. Because it could.

What do you do if the answer is no, I'll think about it, etc? Walk away? Pretend? If it involves faking the happy reaction, what else will you have to fake, the whole relationship? Ugh.

I agree with the points in the other two replies, but what I think (maybe?) this comment is getting at is not "won't anyone think of the poor man doing the asking" but rather that not all proposals happen to women - sometimes they do the asking, sometimes there's no woman involved.

That said, the vast majority of big TV/cinematic proposals are heteronormative so I think it's fair that most of the discussion has been around that scenario.
