I agree with you with big, public proposals. I don't see how the person being proposed to has any option but to say yes if the question is being asked in front of loads of people / on tv / etc. I think I'd even feel weird answering in front of my family, but I'm a weirdly private person.

I think in private takes the pressure off and allows the couple to talk it through instead of forcing a 'yes' to please a crowd.

I'm basically the same, but even then I find it odd to place so much importance on a single conversation when it comes to such a major decision.

My brother's girlfriend doesn't consider herself engaged because there was no official proposal even though they're both agreed that they'll get married and have talked about it a fair bit. That's just weird to me.

SA

I didn't even think of that lol. My sister and her now husband were the same, they were talking about their wedding a year before he proposed. I guess the actual proposal is just the nice tradition , and shouldn't be the start of the conversation about marriage.

Seriously. I will never understand that. I have a friend and she and her fiancee/boyfriend/whatever have been talking about marriage for years, but because they can't afford a wedding or a nice ring or legitimate proposal they won't consider themselves engaged. Even though they are set on marriage. So bizarre.

Completely agreed on all of this. Plus, depending on the type of public proposal or how it plays out, it can come off rather...showy and insincere.

The best bet would be to smile for the public and the whisper in your SO's ear that you'll talk about it later. But whos going to think clearly in that situation?
