My brother's girlfriend doesn't consider herself engaged because there was no official proposal even though they're both agreed that they'll get married and have talked about it a fair bit. That's just weird to me.

I guess the actual proposal is just the nice tradition , and shouldn't be the start of the conversation about marriage.
