I honestly would say no to anyone who proposed to me in public, because that person clearly doesn't know me well enough to know how awkward and manipulative I would find that. And I also don't think a proposal should come as a total surprise because then you're clearly not on the same page and haven't talked about your future goals and dreams enough, but it would be nice to have it be somewhat of a romantic surprise in terms of when and how it's done.

Not that anyone's going to be proposing to me anytime soon. Just my two cents!

This. I mean, I'm not married myself, but I've always thought that proposals happened after you'd pretty much decided that marriage was going to be a thing, it was just a matter of when. One of my friends recently got engaged and the engagement itself wasn't a surprise to her since they'd already discussed getting married and agreed that they wanted to - the surprise was just in the actual proposal part.

Same here. To me, a proposal falls into the category of 'major life decision that involves your partner in some way and therefore should involve your partner'. If a hypothetical SO ever dropped a surprise like that on me, I would be pissed beyond words and I'd be seriously reconsidering where our relationship stood.

BUT if it had been discussed previously, and both people were on the same page, I can see how a 'surprise' of that sort could be a very sweet gesture, especially if done creatively.
