I would have assumed by unrealistic, they meant "unrealistic for that character" - as in, that character would not have done that. Though "out of character" would have been a less ambiguous way to put it.

I haven't seen the movies in a long time, so I don't remember exactly how he was. Going by the screencap, I could see my dad being like that.

Everything about Denethor in the movies makes me cringe. It feels so hammy and over-the-top, and I hate how badly they messed up the character.

I can't take him seriously because of the acting and such, but I could believe that someone would treat their kid that way.

Meh, I "like" Denethor more in the movies than in the books. He's creates a more interesting dynamic in the world exactly because he's crueler. And he is necessary to create sympathy for Faramir - yes, yes, the movies changed him too, but honestly I think "extremes" are better in movies than they are in books.

Yeah I do too, but I think the movies overdid it a bit with Denethor. The more obvious cruelty towards Faramir I didn't mind, but I did mind the one-dimensionality of his dislike of the idea of Aragorn becoming king, and his despair, which seemed more cowardly in the movies rather than a deep-seated sincere despair of Sauron ever being defeated as in the books, and I don't think that would have been hard to do in the movie.

He never came across overdone to me. I rather thought it was supposed to be a reminder that the "bad guys" are sometimes humans, not everything "bad" is a supernatural force or mutated, ugly creature. Making this guy a dick beyond what would be reasonably expected from being Sauron's influence, whether directly or not, felt more real. Probably wasn't how Tolkien intended it, but to me, Denethor was a terrifying figure because he was more "real" than Sauron.

This.

Denethor is NOT a "bad guy," though. And thinking that he is one is missing the point of his character.

Agreed, OP. It's one thing to complain that it was OOC for Denethor, but if people think it's unrealistic for a father to treat his son that way... well, they must live sheltered lives and I'm envious of them.

The thing I didn't like was they made him dumber. In the books, he was severe, crafty, intelligent, cold. In the movies he acts like a pouty man-child. Having an intelligent foil to Gandalf in the books was way more interesting than seeing Gandalf placating a baby.

This was my biggest dislike of him. I wasn't much fond of how one-dimensional he was, but I especially hated losing his intelligence.

I'm sorry you had to deal with that growing up, OP.
