No I think you're exactly right. I didn't have strong feelings about Barney/Robin in any sort of shipping/fandom-y sense, but from a narrative standpoint they were very obviously the right way to go for both their characters' stories' sakes, and the concept of Ted/Robin as an endgame basically defeated the entire purpose and message of the first four seasons of the show, the whole idea of "you never know what the future will bring, things that you 100% believed at this age don't turn out that way always, you never know how things that seem shitty in the present will look like a stroke of brilliant luck in hindsight when you look back on how it brought you to your true happy ending."

Ted and Robin's relationship AND breakup was wonderful - as a story element - and their friendship afterward and acknowledgement that they were totally unsuited for each other was a really good part of their character arcs. Their getting together pretty much torpedoed everything that show ever stood for.

I didn't watch the whole show but that's my feelings. barney and robin where perfect for each other, literally best friends who also love each other

Regardless of shipping references, the ending did not fit where the characters were at that point in time. It was like regressing them all back several seasons just because the creators were too stubborn to change the ending to fit the new story. It was ridiculous. I wasn't even a big fan of the show, I mostly just kept watching to see how it ended and because I enjoyed much of the cast, but even so the ending made me absurdly angry. I think it's the worst finale I've ever seen.

Hey, OP! I felt the same at first, but I learned a lot of things that came out that made me entirely discount the aired finale and go straight for the official alt ending (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RoHUs8J7x94). And yeah, they get back together in this ending. it was confirmed by the creators.

For example, the mother there wasn't even supposed to be Tracy, it was supposed to be Victoria. THAT's why Tracy feels so off in the finale, why she does nothing to help everyone when she was built up as this helper who brought the entire group together.

Because back in the early days of HIMYM the ratings were so low they were constantly in fear of cancellation, that's why so much of ending was filmed so far in advance. The Barney there? That's S1 Barney. Why the Barney/Robin breakup was so clumsy was because they never existed in the finale and it was a hasty break up.

The story was supposed to go onto the s1-s2 season. It was long before any of this happened, before Barney/Robin had even more than some random flirting--which was inserted by NPH, actually. He confirmed in his memoir that he "matchmade" Barney/Robin because he thought she was the kind of girl Barney would go for.

Also the ending was barely touched from 2006. CBCT barely edited it even when the story went in completely different ways. He even says this, in a status update where he says he literally hadn't touched this script in 6 years. Which brings the question why they would allow the story to go in this direction. From what I can tell, Barney/Robin is what really saved the show and Ted/Robin never got the numbers, but one of the showrunners was super bitter about this (the one who Ted is based on, incidentally)

Funny enough, a lot of the cast was really into Barney/Robin. Kourney Kang, Pamela, NPH, Colbie. All these people were actively working to make it bigger in the series, and were open about how much they loved the pair.

In fact, Pamela signed on because she believed Ted/Robin would never happen. She refused to work with them later because she was so ticked off.

I personally discount a lot of later seasons because Ted's Robin fixation makes no sense in the plot context. He gets over her, is happily dating another girl, and then ROBIN???? ROBIN!! It's obvious that it was showrunners shoving their pairing down our throats.

Colbie's ending for HIMYM was "Barney and Robin riding off into the sunset on a motorcycle together." I feel like she understood it far more than the showrunners who gave us the middle finger did.

I think building up a relationship for seasons upon seasons, having them FINALLY get married, and then breaking them up with what's essentially a one-liner in the epilogue is douchey of the writers regardless of what pairing it is.

I hated the ending so much that I refuse to watch a single episode in re-run now.

Nothing to be ashamed of with this secret! My office actually had this conversation just the other day. Of those of us that watched it, nobody liked Ted/Robin as endgame.

My headcanon version of the finale follows mostly the same path, but when Ted arrives below Robin's window and Robin sticks her head out, she is quickly followed by Barney's, and Ted realises that Robin will never feel the same way for him as he does about her.
