Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders.

Oooh. Thanks. :) I liked Criminal Minds but I think I sort of wandered away around season four or five at some point I think?

I definitely agree that the cast gels better in this show, which is good to see-it seems like they did take a few lessons from the first failed spin-off attempt. I really like Clara, and Matthew and Mae have kind of a cute thing going on. And Russ seems cool, too.

I haven't really focused as much on the case side of things yet, but I do like seeing where the team goes each week.

I want to watch this show but haven't had the time yet. I saw the crossover and the first episode of this season. I hope it gets better. I actually liked the first spinoff. The crossover episode was stilted and it took a while to get its legs but I thought the chemistry and acting were good straight out of the gates.

For this spinoff, the acting felt wooden to me so far. I love Gary from CSI NY but he just didn't feel into this role. And the dialogue was terrible (and I watch NCIS NO so I have a pretty high standard for bad dialogue). The characters were saying things that were clearly exposition and not at all natural.

But I hope that's just because the first episodes need to lay down groundwork. I'm still excited to see more of this show and I hope it gets a 2nd season. I like CM and always support it and its spinoffs.

Given that the show explicitly takes place in other countries whose populations are often largely not white, I don't think it's weird to have non-white killers/kidnappers/whatever. According to Department of Justice statistics, how many white/non-white serial killers there are is proportional to their percentage of the population. Thus, more serial killers in the US are white, because the US has a higher percentage of whites. In many other countries this will obviously not be the case.

One of the things I've respected about both the original (and so far this one) is that they humanize the killers and explain their reasoning without ever justifying what they do. This one seems to be taking the same tack when it comes to cultural differences (such as the episode set in the Middle East, which had victims seemingly being targeted for being gay).

Can't be an easy line for the writers, though, and I respect them for achieving that thus far.

My only quibble with this show is how they make the police in whatever country they are in look incredibly BAD at their job. I'm dreading them coming to my country and making our law enforcement look incompetent, narrow-minded, or just plain nasty too. Even the French police were made to look incompetent.

:) I wonder how welcome a show about foreign cops investigating the deaths in the USA would be. These guys liaison with the locals, yes, but it's sort of like watching Start Trek, where you get to see the natives are a bit buffoony and old fashioned (not to mention stubborn, misogynistic and plain old stupid) and the Federation values are universal and always good...
