Dragons

AKA the most overdone fantasy beast ever.

If you had to write or draw dragons in a new way, how would you do it? Or how would you like to see them depicted?

If you need motivation, pretend there's a million dollar reward for most creative answer.

I'd make it fat, shelled, and flightless. Also it dribbles gasoline.

In my ideal dragon world, they are tame like dogs and are bred into hundreds of breeds just like dogs. I want a dragon the size of a dalmatian with stripes. And a dragon large enough to ride. And a tiny dragon that can hang out on my shoulder.

Or maybe more like pigeons. I want the dragon equivalent of this.

I like the idea of dragons in all sizes as well.

That is a very curly pigeon.

When I was ten years old, I was making up magic styles for different fantasy races, and I decided that dragons had the power of Flair. Every spell they can use is powerful, awe-inspiring, inefficient, and impractical, much like dragons themselves. They like to think of themselves as the supreme race, empowered by the Creator to guide and control other species, but they're secretly a little jealous of how others get more magic that's actually useful.

(Conversely, orcs have the magic of Subtlety, which is why you never notice an orc using magic.)

Maybe just use actual dinosaurs as a basis and have several different kinds and give them feathers and fluff and multiple bright colors or camouflage.

I like dragons being beautiful, terrifying, and feral. I don't really like them talking, mainly because I can't imagine how it's done. I don't think I could ever portray them in a new way because I think they've mostly been done to death - not that I care, give me all the dragons, dragons everywhere!

The spaceship Shippy McShipface floated through a little piece of the galaxy cut off from the rest of the Imperial Fleet. For some reason the communications division couldn't puzzle out, messages didn't go through. Navigation equipment didn't work. Captain Muhammed Fayad supposed he should be grateful the life support systems still worked.

The bridge of the ship had a window that opened up into the vastness. The first time he looked out at the millions upon millions of stars he felt like he was falling through space. Now, stuck and with his engineers desperately not solving the problems of the ship, he felt a wave of terror washing over him. It was replaced by momentary confusion; for a second he could have sworn that a cluster of stars blinked at him, like at eye with a hair stuck in the corner.

He shook his head and paged his first officer. The lonely darkness of space got to everyone at some point. He had been up for twenty-six hours straight. Once the ship was moving, he would take a long, hot shower and crash into bed.

Wait. He checked the date on his watch. Ramadan was over, which meant delicious food. Breakfast (or lunch or dinner) was a go before the shower and bed.

He must have looked happy because Midshipman Jaber and Midshipman O'Leary gave him questioning looks over the computer panel they were trying to reconfigure.

"Ramadan is over," he explained. "We can eat before sundown." He wasn't sure how much O'Leary knew about Ramadan.

"I always feel happy when I can eat before sundown, then I feel guilty for being happy. Is that normal, Captain?" Midshipman Jaber asked.

"It's certainly not abnormal."

"What about you, O'Leary? You feel guilty at the end of Lent?"

"I'm Catholic. We feel guilty about everything." A few more keys were punched. "Try it now, Sir."

Captain Fayad cleared his throat. "This is Captain Fayad of Shippy McShipface to Headquarters. Headquarters, do you read me?"

The bridge filled with the crackle of broken equipment. Everyone held their breaths and when nothing happened, Jaber and O'Leary simultaneously smacked their foreheads on the computer panels.

Then...buzzing. Followed by: "This is.....miral....ollins. Do you..." More buzzing.

"Admiral Collins, we read you!" Captain Fayad shouted. "You are breaking up. We are in the Delta Quadrent of the Betta Gamma Galaxy. Our communications are broken and our navigation systems are malfunctioning. Our coordinates are..."

The buzzing came back, and at the same time Ensign Kruger screamed. She was a small woman, and he wouldn't have thought her lungs capable of holding enough air for a scream that long or loud.

Not that he blamed her. The stars were moving. They swirled into patterns like a child's connect-the-dot coloring book, twisting into a snout, teeth, horns, and eyes. The sharply grinning mouth opened to reveal a swirling galaxy of a tongue, and those eyes, damn those eyes! They were black holes. No light, and no hope escaped from them. They were surrounded by a rim of orange which trickled out of the head into other, equally brilliant colors.

Most fantastic were the wings. They were a cloudy purple that burned white hot in the center. They stretched out behind the face that turned toward the ship. For a second it seemed to Captain Fayad that the dragon was looking straight at him.

He didn't have time to give orders. The monster from the stars opened its mouth and a crackling blue-white stream of radiation shot towards the ship.

Tl/dr: space dragon made of stars and nebulas that shoots particle beams.

Instead of breathing fire it'd be interesting to see dragons that coated themselves in pitch or oil and set themselves on fire, maybe before fighting each other or as part of dominance or courtship displays or something. So they'd be fireproof, more or less, but it would make the whole humans riding dragons thing lose its appeal.

"Oooh, the dragon shoots fire and has wings and is 90% reptilian...." yawn.

Can I have some flightless dragons that have maybe cat features imposed on them? Can they charge the air and summer electricity? Can they have outright fur? Can some of them not so much flap their wings to fly but instead jump from cliffs and glide?

I would just draw whatever the fuck I wanted and call it a dragon, like the way tigers are in Monster Rancher. I'll draw a cat that breathes fire. BAM. Enjoy your dragon.

A world where dragons become the only form of public transport, and if people behave like assholes on public transport, they get eaten by dragons.

I really like the idea of miniature dragons too. I wanted a mini Hungarian Horntail like the moving toy one Harry selects during the Triwizard Tournament.

I like dragons in a variety of sizes, like Kaijin said, I also like intelligent dragons, especially if they can shapeshift. I've always had a fondness for shapeshifting magical beings.
