Not all music films. Try "Inside Llewyn Davis", "Sparkle", "Straight Out Of Compton" or "Whiplash".

Those are films about musicians not "music films". They were structured with a strong plot first, and the performance of various musical numbers second. A "music film" in this context is rather more like a music video for an entire album, using some generally flimsy and, yes, boring story to link the songs together.

And do I ever hope you are citing the 1976 Sparkle with Irene Cara, not the one with Jordin Sparks. *shudder*
