not exclusively a slur but I wish people didn't throw the word 'homosexual' around when the word 'gay' exists and was coined by us, rather than a medical establishment diagnosing us with a mental illness. the asexuals/discourse people on tumblr are alllll about calling gay people "homosexuals" and it's so dehumanizing and gross. when they're not calling the LGBT community the "queer" community and forcing another slur on the rest of us that is

ESL here: I use "homosexual" usually when referring to both gay and lesbian people because I kinda thought gay was used mainly for homosexual men (considering that when you say gay people, I would assume you only mean homosexual men rather than gay and lesbian people both). So beetween "queer is a slur, don't use it" and "homosexual is a slur, don't use it" and "gay is/isn't a term that opens a sentence up to confusion" - yeah, sorry, no clue what word to use.

"gay and lesbian" is just as easy to type

Until someone comes along and finds that offensive as well.

LGBT involves more than just gay and lesbian people though.

Meanwhile when I hear someone talking about "The gays" it sounds like a slur, while "homosexual" sound technical.

well putting "the" in front of anything makes it sound questionable, but homosexual has a definite more dehumanizing history than "gay." I don't mind it used as an adjective in the context of articles or something, ie: homosexual attractions, but on its own it's just clearly harkening back to a time when "homosexual" was a mental illness diagnosis.
