...I honestly can't remember where I got it. Feel free to take it, it's not mine. I don't think.

Dark Souls (as well as Demon's Souls and Bloodborne) is, thematically, in vibe, and in intent, a love letter to old super-difficult dungeon crawler RPGs such as Wizardry (popular in Japan long after the US forgot about it) and From Software's own King's Field. It's essentially a modern take on that kind of game, a third person action RPG where every step must be measured, every fight has the potential to be lethal, and every victory practically orgasmic (especially against bosses.) It's well known for its difficulty, but it's also some of the darkest dark fantasy I've ever seen.

I see your depressing DS trailer and give you: the DS3 launch trailer. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LUIQR2iK7uI

Another thing I honestly think the series doesn't get enough credit for is the customizability of builds. People were complaining that Bioware won't let you be fat/androgynous/an overly muscular woman or feminine dude for ages, but like... guys, Soulsbourne's let you be an obese hero since its inception, if you really wanna. And the armor is identical for female characters. There are sliders for just about everything. Your skin can be anything from pitch black to frosty white and everything in between or other. You can even by young or old.

To me that's an essential part of the story: it's a grim tale of survival, and having grotesque titty armour would just destroy the mood utterly. It's not here to pander, it's here to hand you your ass on a plate. I mean, yes, ultimately the Chosen Undead/Bearer of the Curse/Good Hunter/Ashen One's physical characteristics don't actually matter to the story, only the player's choices do, but that I think is in and of itself a powerful statement.

I'm genuinely surprised there's so much hullaballoo about the progressiveness of some developers but From is hardly ever mentioned.

The trailers have always had some great music, but I still feel they missed a trick by not using this song.

Also, I agree with you completely. I think people have a tendency to focus on the series' legendary difficulty while missing all the other shit that goes with it.
