Forgive me, I don't know that much about Spiderman... but Aunt May is his aunt and not his great aunt right? In that case 50 seems like about right to be the aunt of a teenager. Unless she had an established age.

But yeah, it doesn't surprise me that hollywood would go for casting the hot tamale that looks like she could be 30.

I googled it after everyone kept fussing about it, but yeah. Aunt May is supposed to be Peter's dad's sister. So... why is she supposed to be 70 again?

Sibling gaps of up to thirty years have been documented. It is more than possible.

"More than possible" doesn't mean "typical on average".

Sibling gaps of up to 25 years are still common in some cultures though. Do we know how old Peter's father was when Peter was born, because I'm certain we can get to mid sixties or seventies fairly easily.

We don't. And I say this is someone who has a nephew with more grey hairs than I do. But the character is not portrayed that way in the comics at all.

Maybe whoever wrote the comic thought a woman in her 50+ would look that old?

(Anonymous) 2016-04-30 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
People looked older and older at fifty as you go back in time, so when Spider-man first debuted then fifties were like dead or something.

Marvel Zombies: Aunt May!

Spiderman is from the 60s.

Well, I'm looking right now at photow on the wall of my OH's ancestors taken in their 50s in the 1930s and 40s and...no.

It's not impossible, but I always thought it was weird she'd look two generations older than him instead of one. My dad is an only child and my mom is the oldest of her siblings. All of my aunts by blood or marriage are younger than my parents and the youngest of my mom's sisters was only 22 when I was born, which means she was only 37 when I was 15.

I'm going to be the aunt of a 15-year-old in 2 years. I'm in my early 30s.

My niece just turned 16 and I'm 32. I'm two months older than her mother though, because my brother (18 months older than me) and her were fucking idiots. >.>

My sister is 10 years older than me, but ... yeah.
