Are they casting the woman on the left as her? Really? That's ridiculous. If so, I'm with you OP.

Yeah, they've cast Marisa Tomei as the new Aunt May. And while I know it's not as old as other actresses, she is 51?

To me it's not about the actual age. (In Hollywood with expert stylists and loads of plastic surgery, people's ages and how old they look can be vastly off). I just prefer an actor/actress that resembles the character they're playing at least superficially. I can't say I see any resemblance here...

And while they could have pure-hearted motives, it makes me sad to see a part that could go to someone who looks like Aunt May get cast like that, when there's not enough parts for older-older people offered as it is.

While on one hand 51 is not a bad age for a late-teens-early 20s person's aunt (presuming that Aunt May really is the sister of one of Peter's parents), she has a very young face for 51 to my mind, and yes, I did go check Google because that picture in the secret had me unsure that it was a recent one.

Yes that's the new May. From Rosemary Harris to Sally Ford to Marisa Tomei. They'll be casting Jessica Chastain for the next reboot.

Oh I agree. I also think it's pretty sexist.

I'm just waiting for the Tony/Aunt May fanfic. Bring it on, MCU fans!

(Anonymous) 2016-04-30 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Hell. No.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-30 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
So you want to reduce Aunt May to being nothing more than Tony's rebound after breaking up with Pepper? What a shitty way to treat all three characters.

...but I think I'd rather read Doc Ock / Aunt May fanfic. Besides, it almost happened in the comic book canon!

I enjoy Marisa Tomei and I'm sure she'll do fine in the role, but that's just...really, really weird casting. I'm glad that she's at least past 50 (barely) but what an odd choice

Same...at this rate 'Aunt May' is going to be Peter's 26 year old aunt by some strange marriage conventions who is an intern at a magazine

(Anonymous) 2016-04-30 08:31 pm (UTC)(link)
part of me wants to lol but at the same time I genuinely think this will happen one day

[personal profile] kallanda_lee 2016-04-30 08:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I generally liked the casting, but she felt really wrong to me.

Like; obviously it's possible to have a young aunt, but that's so not the character.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-30 08:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh, there's still a +30 year age difference between Tom Holland and Marisa Tomei, so I can't say it bothers me. And I thought she did just fine (with what little screen time she had) in CA:CW.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-30 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Forgive me, I don't know that much about Spiderman... but Aunt May is his aunt and not his great aunt right? In that case 50 seems like about right to be the aunt of a teenager. Unless she had an established age.

But yeah, it doesn't surprise me that hollywood would go for casting the hot tamale that looks like she could be 30.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-30 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I googled it after everyone kept fussing about it, but yeah. Aunt May is supposed to be Peter's dad's sister. So... why is she supposed to be 70 again?

Yeah that was really weird, she is 51 apparently but Aunt May was always an older looking lady and I still prefer the actress they had for the first lot of Spider-Man films.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-30 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
YES Rosemary Harris was the most perfect Aunt May ever. Definitely old visually and impacted financially and physically and abilities-wise by her oldness, but very sharp and intelligent and strong-willed.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-30 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah its like above all else, a woman must be sexy. otherwise why does her character exist? -_-

(Anonymous) 2016-04-30 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow, this gave me a flashback to that disturbing bit in Terry Gilliam's Brazil where the main character's elderly mother has herself facelifted to the point where she looks younger than her son.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-30 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Pretty sure that's some sort of weird Oedipal dream sequence he has where his mom looks like his girlfriend.

But Peter Parker is a teenager. In Civil War they even specifically cast a young looking actor. I have a friend who's 35 who has a nephew who is Peter Parker's age. When I'm in my late-thirties my nephew will be Peter Parker's age. I agree she's not the Aunt May from the comics but, considering Peter's age, to me it makes sense that she could be even as young as her mid thirties.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-02 06:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm sort of wondering if the reason they cast Marisa as Aunt May was to eventually pair her up with Tony. It seems pretty obvious that Gwyneth doesn't seem interested in reprising her role as Pepper. And honestly, I would be okay with this. I love Pepper. But I love Marisa Tomei far more than Gwyneth Paltrow and we all know Maris has great chemistry with RDJ.
