The problem is that his hair looks younger than his face. A better dye job that was more realistic for an older man (a little more variation in tone, a sprinkle of gray?) wouldn't look so glaringly off kilter. Right now it looks like he touches up his hair and beard with shoe polish.

Or not? My dad had black hair until he had chemo in his late sixties - after that, it came back salt-and-pepper. So having no grey at his age isn't exactly 'wrong'.

Not wrong, no, but people like your dad tend to be exceptions, not the norm. Being in your early 51 and not having a single gray hair isn't most peoples' experience, so it looks off to some.
