It happens like that sometimes. I listened to Jeff Buckley's Grace exactly once before he died and didn't connect with it at all, then picked it up again randomly months later and became a big fan. I was really sad about David Bowie as an 80s kid with lots of memories of Labyrinth and early MTV and his whole influence on the era, but him dying also made me realize how much of his work I'd missed out on. Seems like dying always gets you new fans, or even more fannish fans, so that's good? lol

I think he COULD be even if he doesn't come from a culture of it. He's been working with the Avengers for years now, after all, and had a lot more experience outside Asgard.

I think this movie had a great discussion on identity and adoption and really like how the series is handling it, and I also really like how the parents are characterized. I would absolutely rec people watch all three! They're well worth the time.

Secret is that I feel like the third movie sent the franchise downhill pretty hard, and that sucks. Compared to the first two, the villain kind of sucks and the conflict was sort of formulaic and stupid. While I still enjoyed seeing the characters on screen and thought that the animation was great, I wasn't half as engaged as I had been previously. Plus the side characters got no real role to play compared to the earlier movies, and Jackie Chan and Lucy Liu seemed to be there really just to be recognizable Famous Asian Cast Members, their characters contributed pretty much fuck all in this one.

It felt rushed and like they tried to cram too many ideas into too short a time frame. An extra half an hour or even making it a two parter (the family thing in one movie, the kung fu and kai thing in another) might have done it a lot of good. I get really annoyed when I see people rate it better than the second, which I think was FAR better written overall.

I grew up with barely any exposure to pop culture.
My parents never actively sheltered me, it just worked out that way.
I tried to catch up with some of what makes up my generation's childhood as an adult but ended up liking one single Disney movie and some anime. None of the 80s and 90s cult movies everyone loves work for me.
Because of this I'm so annoyed at how saturated with nerd nostalgia so much of what's coming out these days is. It makes me feel like a heartless grouch because none of the things everyone has so many positive feelings tied to seem... good. At all.

I just figured out what makes something a big NOTP for me.

If the subject of romance/dating comes up and a woman says “no” that’s the end of it for me. I can’t ship it, and seeing the ship squicks me out. It just hits way too hard with all the “No” means“ Keep trying!” “I’m not interested” means “I’m playing hard to get” crap I’ve dealt with since puberty. I know people IRL change their minds sometimes, doesn’t matter. No means no, forever and ever, and even after that.

Weirdly, hero/villain ships are fine! As long as romance/dating isn’t brought into it in canon I’m fine with characters who canonly hate each other being shipped. But as soon as romance is brought up and rejected, it squicks me.

No wonder I’ve never enjoyed so much canon romantic stuff.
