In what world does criticizing her work get pushback? That's all I ever see "fans" do anymore!

(Anonymous) 2016-05-02 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
This, pretty much. She's definitely hit the "popular to bag on" level of fame.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-02 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
But she's still at the point before the backlash to the backlash begins, where this fact isn't widely recognized, which means that OP gets to feel brave and discerning for their opinion even if it's perfectly wide-spread.

This comment sums thing up perfectly. A+, I love it.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-03 05:44 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed, this is perfect.

There are still plenty of fans who resist the idea that she's not a brilliant writer. Mostly because they mistake "books I loved" with "books that are well written".

(Anonymous) 2016-05-03 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
Um, she is a brilliant writer. As in, millions upon millions of people have avidly read her books. Maybe she doesn't write brilliant prose? But that's a different thing entirely.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-03 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
You'd be right if "brilliant" and "popular" were synonyms. But they're not.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-03 04:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed

All you're really saying here is that she has fans who think she's great, and you disagree with them.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-03 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
Well, no. Where did I disagree? I'm just pointing out that being popular isn't the same as being well written. I love plenty of popular books that aren't great works of literature, and there are great works of literature I don't care for. For me, Rowling falls into that first category. The series will always be one of my favorites, but I'm not under any illusions that the writing is top notch.

you're a nob. I bet you use the term literally fiction when discussing books.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-03 04:53 pm (UTC)(link)
*literary fiction* Get it right if you're going to insult people.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-03 09:02 pm (UTC)(link)
My, aren't we defensive. Are you really so threatened by use of words like "literature"? As it happens, I do use the term "literary fiction" (I assume that's what you meant, although 'literally fiction' is hilarious) on occasion because it's the correct term for a sub-genre of fiction, just like sci-fi/fantasy, mystery, horror, etc. It's kind of funny you think this is snobbery.

Idk, I've had a few friends in the past mention simple and non-offensive critrique about her treatment of lgbt characters, and JK's stans were super aggressive and vicious in response.
I don't know how big It is, but there is defiantly a part of the HP fandom that is very protective of JK's writing. It's kinda creepy.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-03 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly. It happens right here on FS every time there's a secret that's not entirely complimentary of Rowling's abilities, so I have no idea why people pretend she doesn't have a loyal fandom that occasionally gets a little overzealous.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-03 12:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh yes, it's soooooooo creepy.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-03 08:38 pm (UTC)(link)
If you like a writer, all you ever see is the people who think they're an abomination unto the writing world. If you dislike them, all you see is the people who think they should be nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature.
