In what world does criticizing her work get pushback? That's all I ever see "fans" do anymore!

(Anonymous) 2016-05-02 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
This, pretty much. She's definitely hit the "popular to bag on" level of fame.

There are still plenty of fans who resist the idea that she's not a brilliant writer. Mostly because they mistake "books I loved" with "books that are well written".

Idk, I've had a few friends in the past mention simple and non-offensive critrique about her treatment of lgbt characters, and JK's stans were super aggressive and vicious in response.
I don't know how big It is, but there is defiantly a part of the HP fandom that is very protective of JK's writing. It's kinda creepy.

If you like a writer, all you ever see is the people who think they're an abomination unto the writing world. If you dislike them, all you see is the people who think they should be nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-02 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not that common of a phrase.

Whether or not you think she's a good writer.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-02 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Really? People pocket things all the time, so why wouldn't fictional characters do so too?

I don't know how common it is in writing as a whole but it may well be a common phrase in Rowling's writing that she uses unconsciously. A lot of writers have words/phrases they repeat a lot without realizing it.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-02 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Could be both...

... if that's a true story...

...and if it is, that's fucking awesome!

(Anonymous) 2016-05-03 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, good on her! :D

(Anonymous) 2016-05-02 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I have a feeling this is one of those fandom urban legends, TBH. There's a lot of those. Remember Alan Rickman supposedly saying he'd "always" read the HP books?

(Anonymous) 2016-05-02 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
She did tend to fallback on certain phrases/phrasing, but I hate Stephen Fry AND I've always thought the Jim Dale audiobooks are superior anyway so I will happily believe this.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-02 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
If it is petty revenge, I think it's freaking funny and in no way indicative of her not being a good writer.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-02 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
With what we now know about fry, I don't care if it's revenge and I certainly don't think it's petty. If I'd been her I'd have tried to get him fired from the audio book gig.

I have to agree. Especially because I think calling up an author and telling her how to write her book is really stupid. She had every right to respond that way. He didn't have to take the audiobook job.

Asking if he can say one phrase differently on the audiobook is "telling her how to write her book"? I think she was well within her rights to say no but I also think he wasn't doing anything wrong by asking. It was a pretty small request and only a request, not telling her anything.

It was a request, not an order. It was also a pretty trivial one, because the slight change in wording would've made little difference in meaning. You're reading a lot of entitlement into the situation that simply isn't there.

Who gives a shit? Does it have any effect on anything? This post is hilarious and whether she really did it for that reason or not is utterly irrelevant.

I'm a bit confused at the idea that "_ pocketed it" recurring across MULTIPLE BOOKS is an instance of poor editing. Multiple chapters, maybe. But some characters pocket things more than once in their lifetime.

Yeah that seems a pretty weird thing to nitpick.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-03 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
I mean, I'm not a huge Stephen Fry fan at the moment, so good for her? Honestly, though, sometimes audio books do change a word or two, don't they? Do they always get permission from teh author? I'd think that would go through agents and publishers, not just ringing her up. I'm not sure I buy this, tbh.

But even if it's absolutely true: good for her. Defining her motives is for her only, if it's "just" revenge, then that's a bit petty. But authors have the right to decide on their words. Not narrators of audiobooks.

(If he was a jerk to her, why did she agree to have him narrate??)

(Anonymous) 2016-05-03 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
I'm skeptical if this is a true thing. mainly because who in the world would record this, unless it can out of the mouth of Stephen Fry himself.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-03 08:07 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, it's Stephen Fry who tells this story.

I don't think 'Harry pocketed it' appearing a few times throughout the series is an example of lack of writing skills at all. It's a pretty common phrase.
