Eh, more very proggy death metal. It IS Strapping Young Lad after all.

Pity that project no longer exists -- it was mostly Devin Townsend getting some things off his chest, and he's older and more serene now (and sober) and doesn't need it anymore.

Sounded squarely prog to me considering it almost had a thrash element going on and several style changeups throughout, but then I'm not familiar with the band.

It's been a good long time since I've really kept up with the metal scene.

How long ago was that, then? Because I'm kind of surprised you've never heard of SYL or Devin Townsend, as they were huge in the late 90s/early 00s, Devin Townsend himself is one of the most famous people in the scene and Gene Hoglan is rightly hailed as one of the greatest drummers of all time. (There's even a blast beat technique named after him.)

(DT is also very proudly Canadian and has played that up quite a bit.)

Eh, six or seven years at this point. Death metal was never really my jam though (unless you count melodic death metal and gothic/death crossovers), honestly.

I was really more into European "classical" metal or alt metal acts which tended to border on the electro/industrial side of things so other than really popular acts I'm not that familiar with the genre/subgenres.

I do like a lot of different subgeneres of metal, don't get me wrong, I've just never found a death metal band that's really done it for me. You know?

I'll admit that 95% of death metal all sounds the same to me and I used to listen to this shit hour by the hour. Still, though... Strapping Young Lad is just amazing. And if you like really, really epic, wall-of-sound prog, you can't go wrong with Devin's other projects, most of which bear his name.

Edit: took to wiki and found out he did guitar work for Front Line Assembly? Well damn, now I'm sold.
