Just like any Disney movie: it's low-hanging fruit.

I suspect that in a few months to a year, people will be the same towards Zootopia (despite the fact that, IMHO, Zootopia had a lot more heft to it, message-wise) once the dust settles for that as well. I saw Frozen and thought it was horribly mediocre with a lot of flaws, but I don't get the raging, froth-at-the-mouth hate boners that people get for it whenever the subject comes up, either.

The oversaturation of Frozen in pop culture and merchandising probably didn't/doesn't help, either. On a side note, I remember recently, being in a Target, and an Elsa doll randomly set off with 'Let It Go', and a 5-6 year old girl behind me audibly groaned out loud. Her mom asked "Are you sick of that now?" with a laugh.

Oh there'll be all kinds of hate for Zootopia. Like Frozen, it's been super popular after coming out. I agree that it has more "heft" and that will both contribute to the love and the hate (the hate will probably come more from people who didn't think it did enough than from those who disagree with its message, too).

Frozen and Zootopia are not at all comparable. People were displeased with the direction of Frozen and were very outspoken about it before the movie even came out. I'd already decided I didn't like Frozen before it came out because of the blandness of the cast and the way it completely gutted and discarded its source material, a story I'd been waiting for them to make an adaptation of for over a decade. Hearing Let It Go play everywhere, again, before the film was even released was the icing on the nopecake.

People didn't suddenly start disliking Frozen because it was popular. While it certainly didn't deserve the level of backlash it received, people had legitimate issues with the movie well before it became a high grossing film. Zootopia has none of this baggage, and unless something about Zootopia suddenly comes to light that causes wank, at most it'll end up with popularity burnout with people getting sick of hearing about it, and even more likely it'll fade into the background when another animated film shows up to steal the spotlight, just like what happened with Big Hero 6.

I was mostly comparing Zootopia and Frozen in the realm of box office revenue. But yeah, you're right otherwise. Because while it's the biggest animated movie of the year so far, it hasn't oversaturated pop culture the way Frozen did, nor did it have any of the adaptation baggage either. (For what it's worth, it kills me that they didn't do a more faithful adaptation of the Snow Queen story)

The only way I could see there being a backlash against Zootopia at this point, is if Moana doesn't do similar -if not greater- numbers later this year. Calling it now.

I actually meant to respond to the person above me, but yes, I agree with you. :p

These are my reasons for avoiding Frozen. I heard how long they wanted to do the Snow Queen, but we got Frozen instead and I was so disappointed because I would have loved to have seen a Disney take on the Snow Queen. Your Movie Sucks actually did a review of Frozen and compared "Let It Go" to "Firework," saying the basic melody was the same and that it was lazy.

I ended up seeing some preview clips of Zootopia and they were really good and it made me want to see it, still haven't, but that's mostly because lack of funds.
