ETA: ok apparently the blue thing kinda messes up this character if you don't do it. So I can get that. Though if the directors let her get away with it I'd also call it bad writing - having an actor who refuses to get in character should be a dealbreaker, and sacrificing good writing in favor of popular casting seems pandering and dumb to me.

Well, yes, but let's not forget that the movie business is just that - a business. They are obviously hanging a lot of their hopes on this big-name actress (Oscar-winning, whether warranted or not!) to lead the cast.
