Craft thread

[personal profile] belladonna_took 2016-05-04 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
I'm making a cross stitch for my friend for her birthday (https://www.etsy.com/au/listing/204547331/aliens-cross-stitch-toy-story-digital?ref=shop_home_active_7) and I will probably hate myself once I start but I like the idea of finishing it and I never learn. I got new watercolour paper too.

Does anyone else have any projects they want to share at the moment or any questions for other crafty people?

I should really finish the painting I have going for the family of the person I got my liver from... the problem is, it's oil so it takes forever and a half to dry.

Eventually, lol.

Oil is a bit of a pain but the results are usually nice. I do not enjoy cleaning it off my brushes though.

I don't know if our organ donation system allows much contact but that's really cool that you can do that.

Ours gives you a few options as far as contacting the family of deceased donors... they heavily encourage you to write a fully anonymous letter of thanks or a note of some sort to begin with, or you can send some token to them (a piece of art, etc). If both parties agree, there is also the option of the transplant society sharing personal information on behalf of both parties in case the donor would like to meet the donor's family and vice versa.

I opted not to do any of the letter writing or meeting, due to an experience I had with an award I received when I was a teenager that was donated by a woman who said I reminded her exactly of her daughter. ...Who had passed away at my age.

It was extremely creepy, and I really didn't enjoy the expectations of strangers being thrust on me like that. Giving a piece of art seemed a better way to signify that their (I assume son)'s death wasn't for nothing without opening myself up to someone else's emotional trauma.

That's interesting. Thanks for sharing!

Having the really freaky experience of looking almost identical to my dead mother as I've aged, I kind of understand that. The way a lot of people who knew her look at me and want to hug me and cry at me has always made me so uncomfortable. I just let it happen because I don't like to be a jerk but it's really different from the way I deal with my own emotions.

I hope both you and the donor's family are doing well. I imagine it's not an easy process from either side of the equation.

Last night while rooting through my pony supplies for something I never did find, I discovered two stunningly gorgeous skeins of fingering weight merino/cashmere/nylon yarn that I bought almost a year ago, "misfiled" with the craft supplies instead of the yarn, and completely forgot I had. (I'm not much of a stasher; I generally just buy as I find projects but sometimes there's birthday money involved and oh my god that skein is so pretty.) I will probably end up spending an inordinate amount of time on Ravelry tonight trying to figure out what I want to do with it.

Oooh. I love finding things you forgot you had! I found my fabric bag from two moves ago in a box of cook books and kitchen utensils the other day.

That is really not going to take long, and it's only two colors. You'll be done before you know it!

That's what I'm hoping! I haven't done cross stitch in 15 or so years, so simple is good.

Just a question for any knitters or crocheters... anyone ever tried using their non-dominant hand with any amount of success? I recently hurt my dominant hand pretty bad, and I'm looking at all the unfinished projects piled up, calling to me... I just don't know if it would work at all or be all wonky and backwards if I tried to teach myself left-handed.

For knitting, there are actually two different styles that uses two different hands. Continental and English knitting. You might want to look in to seeing which one you already use and how much difficulty you'd have switching.

Hmm that's a good question. I taught myself from a book, so I'm really not sure what method I use. I'll check it out, thanks.

I taught myself how to knit washcloths. I made a few and a friend of mine will be selling them at her booth at an upcoming craft fair. :) They're not hard or super complicated, but I'm a self-taught knitter and I'm rather proud of myself.

Nice! I wish I stuck with something long enough to have enough to sell. That's impressive. I hope the booth does well!
Do you make your own to keep too? How long does it take to make a washcloth?

Thank you!

I made one for myself to product test. It takes a few hours to make them, and I usually do it after work while watching a show or movie. I'd say it takes 2-3 days to make one that way.

Nice!

Does your kitty play with your supplies or is he completely disinterested in that cat way like human things are beneath him?

If I hold a scrap of yarn over his head, he will attack it. But only momentarily. There are more interesting things to do, like lick his paw.
