Re: Disney

it's not my favourite-favourite (those are probably Mulan, Aladdin, and the Lion King), but I've always really loved Hercules and don't know why that one seemed to slip through the cracks. It was funny, the music was amazing, I LIKED that the art style was different and Greek-influenced, the Underworld was legit creepy, James Woods was amazing as Hades! The hero's lady love was a)morally grey and b)older than him (and definitely more experienced!) - there's a lot to love there, in my opinion.

part of the reason I dislike Hercules is how badly they sanitized the myths for Hercules.

well bro....Zeus is not exactly a character you can do accurately in a movie meant for kids. They could have been more real about him and Hera always fighting, but beyond that..

It was a bit more than Zeus and Hera. Hades was kinda butchered as well, and Hercules himself was massively sanitised too. Considering that in the myths the reason he had to kill the Hydra at all, part of his labours, was because Hera had induced him to murder his and Megara's children in a fit of madness. Hera driving him mad and him killing people was something of a theme, really. There was also the multiple subsequent lovers of either sex. So, you know. Massively sanitised in all directions, really, and the one semi-decent god in the myths is now the baddie.

I love Hercules and Meg was my favorite "princess" before Mulan. The Muses are definitely my favorite side characters.

It's all about Hades, man!

I think it gets over looked because it's a bit of an embarrassment, considering how they treated the mythology (Yeah, Zeus and Hera were NOT loving, doting parents) and basically insulted the entire country of Greece (Seriously, they weren't happy with it.)

oh shit, Greece was pissed?! How come? Just cause of the way the mythology was cleaned up for kids, or beyond that?

and true, Zeus and Hera were not accurate, though to do REAL THEM up in a kid's movie would be...risky, haha

It pretty much had to do with the way the mythology was treated, yes. I don't think it was the fact it was cleaned up, more so the fact that it was poorly handled and executed.
